Job Description

Responsible for the management of the law library systems, personnel, services and physical space. As a member of the global Research and Information Center team, manage and provide research and reference services Firm-wide using a variety of legal, business and general information databases and web sites across all practice areas and industries.

Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential functions:

  • Manage and provide reference and in-depth research using appropriate electronic and print sources to attorneys, paralegals, co-team members and administrative staff.
  • Provide Firm-wide research coverage remotely on weekends on a rotating basis with other U.S. Librarians and daily coverage to 6:00 PM.
  • Using a research request system, claim, enter and close requests. Submit time records, accounting for a minimum of seven hours per day plus weekend hours and overtime as appropriate.
  • Manage and provide user support on Lexis, Westlaw and other electronic services and coordinate and provide training with research content vendors for the Washington DC office.
  • Oversee and perform interlibrary loans, contact local firms and academic libraries to obtain needed resources.
  • Participate in knowledge management projects, attend product demonstrations, participate in research product trials, and provide feedback.
  • Prepare and manage the Washington, DC Research Center budget and forecast in conjunction with the DC Director of Administration and the NY Research Center Accounting Administrator.
  • Monitor monthly budget activity reports; provide explanations of projections and variances to DC Director of Administration.
  • Oversee processing of invoices for payment using Library Invoices database.
  • Manage the following Library technical services functions, using SydneyPlus Integrated Library System (ILS) and other Library information management applications as directed:
    • Acquisitions including placing and processing orders and handling renewals. Maintain accurate records. Negotiate with vendors.
    • Catalog and process materials for the collection with the assistance of the NY Research Center Technical Services Manager.
    • Collection maintenance including shelving materials, shifting and weeding physical collection
    • Loose-leaf filing, including monitoring 3rd party filing services, requesting missing supplements.
    • Serials maintenance including check-in, checking for duplication, routing and claiming missing materials.
    • Review new materials for retention or cancellation. Provide preliminary approval and process invoices for payment using invoice application.
  • Supervise and coach Analyst. Prepare mid-year feedback and year-end merit review on same. Review and administer PTO requests.
  • Participate in monthly Research Center Manager Conference Calls.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Additional responsibilities or special projects as assigned by management.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum of five years Law Library and Research experience preferred with the ability to understand the law firm service environment and effectively obtain information from appropriate sources independently.
  • Communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of Attorneys, administrative staff and co-team members.
  • Familiarity with court and government structures including Federal and State and the ability to determine court and legislative structure in unfamiliar jurisdictions.
  • Special knowledge of a particular practice area is a plus, with ability to quickly learn resources applicable to a broad array of practice areas, and seek assistance as needed.
  • Strong expertise in Lexis, Westlaw, VitalLaw, Bloomberg Law, Intelligize, Courtlink, and other Court watch services, patent resources, and general information databases and/or ability to be trained in their use.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new technical systems.
  • Must be able to prepare and present learning opportunities for attorneys.
  • Ability to prioritize and answer a high volume of requests for information while performing other essential duties.
  • Must be very service-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of energy, be very flexible, able to take initiative, work independently as well as under supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage others.
  • Willingness to work more than 35 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.


Education/Certifications:

  • Knowledge of Library systems as normally acquired through a Master’s Degree in Library (M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited school) or J.D. or combination of both, and a sufficient combination of 5+ years of law Library research and Technical Services experience.

Estimated salary range is $150,000 - $165,000.Compensation decisions within the range are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case including but not limited tothe individual's skills, experience, and qualifications.
