Job Overview

The Purchasing Manager is responsible for overseeing the procurement department within the organization. Manage the procurement of goods, ensuring that the company secures the best deals and maintains strong relationships with suppliers. Key responsibilities include negotiating contracts, supervising staff, and implementing purchasing strategies that align with the company's objectives. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lead a team effectively. Additionally, the Purchasing Manager must stay informed about market trends and new products that could benefit the company. Effective communication and negotiation skills are crucial in this role in ensuring that operations run smoothly and cost-efficiently.

A Day In The Life

Every day at Hubbell is different and you'll contribute in many ways. On any given day, you'll make a difference by:
  • Supervise and lead the procurement process, ensuring smooth integration and effective acquisition of materials for ongoing products and new development initiatives, in alignment with strategic objectives and cost optimization.
  • Ensure that all goods and services are acquired in a timely manner against established need, received on time, and at or better than established standard cost.
  • The Purchasing Manager is held to the highest ethical standards and questions any potentially inappropriate procurement activities to maintain the integrity of the company's procurement process.
  • The Purchasing Manager demonstrates strong time management abilities, assessing and coordinating the tasks of the purchasing team.
  • Stays updated on industry developments including procedural changes, document revisions, tariffs, new clauses, required disclosures, and standard certifications relevant to potential business partners.
  • Maintains standard operating procedures, conducts training for purchasing staff on these protocols, and continuously enhances and optimizes all procurement activities.
  • Collaborates with Sourcing, Materials Planning, Warehouse, and Accounts Payable personnel to address issues in the Procurement process and Supplier relationships
  • Problem Solving challenges and supports the purchasing team in managing material risks effectively.
  • Provide support to buyers in managing inventory challenges, including adjusting delivery dates, addressing past due orders, and navigating long lead times, ensuring optimal stock levels are maintained for uninterrupted production and customer satisfaction
  • Supervise and direct the activities of Buyers
  • Ensure purchase orders are placed accurately and on time to support production and operational needs
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, contractual obligations, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with supplier relationships, including performance monitoring, issue resolution, and escalation
  • Coordinate with:
    • Planning and Production to support schedules and material requirements
    • Quality to address supplier quality issues
    • Finance (AP) on pricing, invoices, and cost controls
    • Engineering on specifications and change management
    • Support sourcing activities including RFQs, negotiations, and supplier selection
    • Monitor KPIs such as:
      • On-time delivery
      • Cost savings (MCTO) and purchase price variance (PPV)
      • Supplier performance metrics
      • Past due or expedited orders
    • Identify and implement process improvements to improve efficiency, cost, and service levels
    • Train, coach, and evaluate purchasing staff performance
    • Support audits and ensure proper documentation and record retention

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Operations, Logistics or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Previous progressively responsible leadership or managerial experience
  • Strong computer literacy including advanced capability in Advanced Microsoft Excel (Pivot tables, V-Look Ups), Word, and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Exceptionally articulate in oral and written communications built on strong analytical skills
  • Detail oriented, with excellent follow-through and problem-solving skills
  • Flexible and adaptive to changing priorities
