Position Summary

The Manager of Accounting & Financial Planning is responsible for leading the financial planning, reporting, analysis, and operational finance functions of the organization. This role partners closely with executive leadership, operations, project management, and accounting teams to drive profitability, improve financial performance, strengthen internal controls, and support strategic decision-making. This position reports to the Vice President of Finance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial planning and forecasting processes.


  • Analyze financial results and provide actionable recommendations to executive leadership.


  • Develop financial models to support strategic initiatives, capital investments, and operational decisions.


  • Monitor key financial and operational performance indicators and communicate results to leadership.


  • Partner with Operations, Project Executives, Project Managers, and Project Accountants to monitor project financial performance.


  • Review project cost-to-complete forecasts, analyze project profitability, and identify project risks, margin erosion, or cost overruns.


  • Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition compliance.


  • Review and analyze Schedules of Values (SOVs), progress billings, pay applications, subcontract agreements, lien waivers, retainage, and subcontractor compliance documentation.


  • Partner with Operations and Project Management teams to identify and mitigate commercial, contractual, and financial risk.


  • Lead preparation of annual operating budgets, quarterly forecasts, department-level forecasts, and project-level financial forecasts.


  • Perform variance analysis and communicate budget-to-actual results, cash flow impacts, and working capital considerations.


  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial and management reports.


  • Support month-end and year-end close, audit preparation, GAAP compliance, company accounting policies, and internal control monitoring.


  • Coordinate internal and external audits, including financial statement audits, SOX or internal control reviews, insurance audits, and customer audits.


  • Serve as a liaison between auditors, accounting teams, operations personnel, and executive leadership.


  • Evaluate existing financial and operational processes and recommend improvements that strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and improve reporting integrity.


  • Supervise and mentor Finance Analysts, Project Accountants, and other finance personnel as assigned.


  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, professional development, and standardized reporting practices.


  • Drive process efficiency through ERP optimization, reporting tools, dashboards, KPI reporting, automation, and business intelligence solutions.


  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; or equivalent progressive finance experience as determined by company leadership.


  • 10+ years of progressive finance experience.


  • 10+ years of construction industry finance or project accounting experience.


  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts, subcontract agreements, Schedule of Values (SOV) development and management, progress billings, pay applications, lien waivers, lien rights, retainage accounting, and change order management.


  • Strong knowledge of job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, project profitability analysis, and construction operations finance.


  • Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, financial reporting, audit preparation, compliance, and internal controls.


  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with ERP systems in a project-based environment.


  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and executive communication skills.


  • Ability to partner effectively with executive leadership, operations, project management, accounting, auditors, and other cross-functional stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications

  • CMA, MBA, CPA, or equivalent professional certification.


  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or specialty contracting industries.


  • Experience with COINS+ ERP system.


  • Experience managing finance, project accounting, or operational finance teams.


  • Knowledge of cash management, treasury, corporate financial planning, data analytics, project controls, and business intelligence reporting.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in office, meeting, customer, and active jobsite environments. The role requires regular local travel, occasional overnight travel, schedule flexibility, extended periods using a computer, and walking jobsites while wearing required PPE. Availability outside normal business hours may be required for significant operational or customer matters.
