Summary

The Risk Informed Applications team within the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Organization is responsible for exercising Duke's PRA models (consisting of fault tree and data analysis (CAFTA,) Human Reliability Analysis (HRA Calculator,) accident analysis (MAAP), among others) to adopt and support risk-informed applications such as Risk-Informed ISI, Maintenance Rule, and Mitigating Systems Performance Index. This team is also responsible for site support of Maintenance Rule (a)(4) risk evaluations, NOEDs, SDPs, Licensee Event Reports, Component Risk Ranking (AOV, MOV, check valve), Time Critical/Time Sensitive Operator Action identification, and some LAR development, including Audit and Inspection support. These functions include additional ancillary accounting (invoice approval), budgeting, and project oversight of activities as needed to execute these responsibilities.

This position requires high individual motivation and personal initiative to strategize plans, to identify and coordinate Application Updates with the Models group when new Models of Record are issued, interface with vendor, regulatory, and internal stakeholders to resolve emergent issues. This position also requires performance within a team-oriented environment that is very customer focused, thus placing a premium on well-developed communication, collaboration, and follow-up skills.

  • Oversee SDPs, interfacing or ID'ing a PRA point of contact to lead the interface with Region II SRAs

  • Manage CAP assignments, ensuring that the team, prioritizing tasks, and completing on or before due date (no overdue actions!)
  • Prioritizes needs for PRA support and assigns qualified PRA resources to both prepare and review the required analysis.
  • Ensures individuals performing owner reviews for vendor prepared analyses possess and maintain qualifications.
  • Conducts pre-job brief and post job critiques.
  • Provides transmittal information to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Provides oversight and direction for PRA products including Application Updates, maintaining the basis/input documents for Risk-Informed ISI, Maintenance Rule, and Mitigating Systems Performance Index, Maintenance Rule (a)(4) risk evaluations, Component Risk Ranking (AOV, MOV, check valve), Time Critical/Time Sensitive Operator Action identification, etc.
  • Ensures timely and accurate communication with site management on projected completion times and needed information for risk evaluation projects
  • Ensures site contacts are established and maintained with site orgs such as Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Engineering, Major Projects, and Training.
  • Provides guidance on the scope and hazards to be included in any risk evaluation or product.
  • Ensures the PRA Applications team plans, projects, and accomplishes budget spend projections to be predictable and meet Corporate Engineering and Enterprise expectations.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, evaluation and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Leads PRA Applications team in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
  • Ensure that the PRA Applications team prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, contracts, and products to meet company objectives and needs.
  • Seeks efficiency and improvements in fundamental concepts, practices, processes and procedures and continues to acquire new skills and knowledge.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally with external entities such as EPRI, PWROG, BWROG, NEI, NRC, and other utilities.
  • Accommodates emergent work and effectively multi-tasks while keeping senior management informed.
  • Ensures that the licensing basis, as documented in approved site-specific Safety Evaluations, is followed for NRC-approved methodologies
  • Assures training needs for the group are met by activities such as attending seminars, computer-based training, and work group specific training classes.


Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of engineering experience with 5 years of engineering experience directly related to the nuclear power industry.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in PRA activities
  • Knowledge of PRA risk-informed Applications such as Risk-Informed ISI, Maintenance Rule, and Mitigating Systems Performance Index, NOEDs, SDPs, Licensee Event Reports, Component Risk Ranking (AOV, MOV, check valve), Time Critical/Time Sensitive Operator Action identification, and some LAR development.
  • Knowledge of PRA Software Tools such as Phoenix Risk Monitor, Phoenix Architect, CAFTA.
  • Demonstrated involvement in Nuclear Industry organizations such as EPRI, NEI, BWROG/PWROG, ANS Code Committees, etc.
  • Professional Engineer License or MBA (or business-related experience with case evaluations)
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Work experience at a Nuclear Site/Station within the Engineering, Ops, Maintenance or other support organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and/or work with a diverse team of individuals to meet a common goal or timeline.


Specific Requirements
  • Ability to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel.


Working Conditions
  • Onsite Mobility Classification - Work will be performed at a company facility. As a manager, this role requires office presence on all working days, though direct reports are hybrid.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work hours
  • Travel to other work locations and may include overnight stay (~10%)
