Manager, Major Projects
Position Summary

The Manager, Major Projects is based in Airdrie, Alberta and is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution and delivery of major projects. The Manager, Major Projects ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with Strike's established policies, procedures, contractual requirements and performance expectations.

The Manager, Major Projects provides leadership across project operations, administration and support functions, with accountability for safety, quality, financial performance, scheduling, resource management, client relationships and overall project execution. This position contributes operational and market insight to the development and execution of annual and strategic business plans and works closely with other business units and corporate service departments to coordinate resources and support successful project delivery.

Core Accountabilities
  • Lead, promote and maintain a safe work environment, monitoring project activities to ensure a high standard of compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, company requirements and established procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures and standards relating to safety, quality, finance, operations, equipment, procurement and project execution.
  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the planning, mobilization, execution and closeout of major projects.
  • Monitor project activities to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget and in accordance with contractual and quality requirements.
  • Ensure comprehensive pre-job, on-the-job and post-job planning, documentation and oversight are completed.
  • Establish and monitor project budgets, forecasts, schedules, productivity, costs, margins and other key performance indicators.
  • Review project performance regularly and implement corrective actions when safety, schedule, cost, quality or productivity concerns arise.
  • Oversee the efficient allocation and utilization of project personnel, equipment, materials and other field assets.
  • Work closely with project teams to identify labour, equipment, procurement and subcontracting requirements.
  • Ensure project risks are identified, assessed and controlled, including commercial, contractual, operational, supply-chain and subcontractor risks.
  • Support appropriate procurement and subcontracting strategies, including supplier qualification, contract management and risk allocation.
  • Manage client relationships and ensure all aspects of client projects are addressed, including estimating, bid preparation, contract negotiations, change management, resource allocation, issue resolution and project closeout.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients regarding project status, performance, risks, changes and emerging requirements.
  • Ensure changes in scope are identified, documented, priced, approved and incorporated into project forecasts and schedules.
  • Support business development planning and execution for Major Projects by leveraging existing industry relationships and identifying potential project opportunities.
  • Maintain a strong network of industry contacts and develop relationships that support future project and business opportunities.
  • Monitor industry, client and regional market trends and provide input into annual, strategic and business development plans.
  • Prepare and contribute to annual operating and capital budgets, forecasts and business plans for Major Projects.
  • Build an organizational culture that supports operational excellence, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and responsible growth while maintaining the highest level of integrity.
  • Attract, develop and retain high-performing employees to ensure people with the appropriate skills, experience and motivation are in place to meet current and future project requirements.

  • Work collaboratively with Safety, Quality, Finance, Equipment, Procurement, Human Resources, Business Development and other corporate service departments on matters of mutual concern.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to support Major Projects and the broader organization.
Qualifications
Education
  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, business administration or a related discipline.
  • Journeyman trade certification accompanied with management and leadership program accreditation.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and industry experience may be considered.
Experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible industrial construction experience, including at least five years in a management capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the planning and execution of large, complex industrial construction projects.
  • Experience in major facility construction.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: modular construction, industrial fabrication, industrial maintenance, and pipeline construction and major facility construction.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams, subcontractors and multiple project stakeholders.
  • Experience with project budgeting, forecasting, scheduling, contract administration, change management and cost control.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Proven leadership capabilities and the ability to effectively lead multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong project-management skills, including developing project budgets, managing forecasts and achieving required margins.
  • Sound understanding of financial management, project controls and commercial principles.
  • Strong knowledge of major-project planning, execution, risk management and closeout.
  • Well-developed network of industry and client contacts.
