Reporting to the AVP, Disability Management Operations, the Manager, Life & Disability Management is accountable for the operational performance, quality, and outcomes of STD and LTD disability claims. The role requires strong business acumen, strategic mindset, and execution focus to ensure consistent application of proactive, evidence-based disability management practices that improve recovery, sustainable return-to-work outcomes, customer experience, and plan sponsor value.

The Manager leads and develops high-performing teams, fosters strong internal and external partnerships, and drives continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Medavie Blue Cross's disability management strategy and Curated Care model. The role may provide leadership for specialized claim pathways, including mental health and other complex disability segments, while ensuring operational excellence, risk management, and consistent customer outcomes.

What You'll Do:

Leadership & Execution
  • Oversees the implementation and the application of all programs/processes related to the management of STD & LTD claims including specialized areas such as mental health and complex disability management.
  • Applies strong business acumen to balance quality, cost, duration, and risk while maintaining a customer-focused approach.
  • Ensures accountability for results through disciplined execution, performance monitoring, and timely decision-making.
  • Provides leadership and operational oversight for specialized disability management practices, including evidence-based mental health strategies designed to improve recovery and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.

Strategy, Improvement & Change Leadership
  • Demonstrates a strategic mindset by identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to improve recovery and RTW outcomes across all disability segments, including mental health.
  • Leads initiatives that reduce claim duration, escalation exposure, and variability, using data and evidence to drive decisions.
  • Facilitates change by guiding teams through new practices, models of care, mental health programs and process improvements while maintaining engagement and focus.


Stakeholder Engagement, Communication & Partnership
  • Delivers operational reporting, trend analysis, and evidence-based recommendations to plan sponsors and internal partners including insights related to mental health and complex disability trends.
  • Demonstrates engaging communication, translating complex information into clear, actionable insights.
  • Builds trusted partnerships with plan sponsors, internal teams, and external providers to improve disability and mental health outcomes and customer experience.


People Leadership, Coaching & Talent Development
  • Leads on workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Coaches and develops others, strengthening leadership capability, technical expertise, and readiness for future roles.
  • Creates an inclusive, accountable environment that supports performance, development, and adaptability during change.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous learning and evidence-based disability management to build organizational capability in emerging areas of practice, including mental health.


What You Bring:
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant program and/or a combination of relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in group insurance, with deep expertise in disability management and mental health claims (STD and LTD).
  • Minimum of 5 years' progressive leadership experience, including direct leadership of professional teams.
  • Demonstrated track record of coaching, developing, and performance-managing leaders and individual contributors, with a focus on building future leadership capability.
  • Proven experience leading teams through change and evolving business priorities.
  • Experience managing complex disability claims, including mental health and return-to-work programs, is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and understanding of operational, financial, and risk drivers in group disability management.
  • Strong customer orientation, balancing claimant experience, plan sponsor needs, and organizational outcomes.
  • Proven strategic mindset with the ability to translate organizational goals into operational plans and results.
  • Strong execution capability, ensuring initiatives are effectively implemented and sustained.
  • Experience facilitating change and leading teams through evolving priorities and complexity.
  • Engaging communicator with the ability to influence, build trust, and strengthen partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and develop others, building team capability, confidence, and succession readiness.
  • High integrity, accountability, and adaptability in a complex disability claims environment.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is preferred.

Pay Range:
99,177 - 119,013 CAD

The Base Pay range may vary depending on the successful candidate or other relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience and education/training. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Medavie employees may participate in various performance-based incentive programs. Payments under these programs are discretionary and subject to both individual and organizational results.
