Job Description

Responsible for the effective administration and management of one or more laboratory departments. Areas of accountability include human resources management, financial management, operations management, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, strategic planning and customer service.

Responsibilities

  1. Leadership
    1. Schedules and assigns work to staff members, monitors work quality and quantity, and ensures efficient departmental operations by providing back-up supervisory support when needed.
    2. Oversees the staff of their departments, promotes effective relationships within the hospital, monitors work quality and quantity, and assists in the preparation of performance appraisals.
  2. Program Management and Daily Operations
    1. Performs at an acceptable productivity level when assisting in developing, preparing, and recommending annual departmental operating and capital budgets and monitors the economical use and procurement of equipment, supplies, and personnel. Ensures that periodic equipment maintenance is carried out in order to control hospital and departmental costs and conserve all hospital resources. Investigates new techniques, practices, and equipment in an effort to identify ways of maximizing the quality and efficiency of health care services provided to patients.
    2. Assists in planning short- and long-term projects and provides feedback to employees thus providing adequate communication and understanding.
    3. Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently in an effort to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of the laboratory service customers. Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas and requests and orders supplies as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services whenever possible.
    4. Functions cooperatively with the Medical Director in meeting the clinical and technical needs of the department and its customers.
  3. Performance Improvement and Quality
    1. Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily function and work processes to include assisting in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement programs and participation in multi-disciplinary CQI efforts. Promotes and encourages the growth and development of all personnel by encouraging their participation in approved continuing education activities and advocates continuing education as a means of promoting the high-quality services provided by all departmental personnel.
  4. Other Duties as Assigned
    1. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.


Qualifications

  • 3 years as a Medical Technologist and previous supervisory experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Licensed in Louisiana as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist
