What is the opportunity?

This position manages a Group Underwriting Team within the Group Underwriting Department. This position leads staff who are responsible for underwriting and risk selection for group business with the mandate of acquiring and maintaining profitable business. This position is accountable for implementing tactics that align with our business objectives, leadership and development of the group underwriting personnel, day-to-day operations, and partnering with sales distribution, claims and all other internal departments within the group division. This takes into account: revenue generation, unit costing and efficiency, policy and product development, operational and administrative effectiveness, legal issues, regulatory standards, compliance, market conduct, anti-money laundering and terrorism policy.

What will you do?
• Contribute proactively and effectively as a member of the Underwriting management team. Support the NBO, Group Division and Group Underwriting business plan and oversee the execution of tactics with objectives to: increase potential for profitable growth, increase market share while delivering excellent operational service levels.
• Responsible for the service results achieved by the Group Underwriting team. Ensuring delivery of a superior client experience & achieving levels of client satisfaction that contribute positively to persistency and reputation in the marketplace.
• Provide superior technical expertise and leadership in risk selection and contributing to establishing team objectives consistent with business unit and division objectives. Lead the delivery of insurance risk assessment and service results.
• Work in partnership with Group Distribution & Regional Office Management to develop positive and effective business relationships with clients and 3rd party distribution channels across Canada. Lead and contribute to the achievement of the Group Strategy Project which may include special projects and participation in cross functional committees.
• Provide leadership, mentoring, coaching to underwriters including performance management & developmental plans. Actively work with direct reports to identify leadership and management development plans. Mutually work on action steps to address these needs and make staff more effective in their roles.
• Ensure Compliance with corporate policies. In partnership with Risk Management and Compliance, enhance the assessment, mitigation, and monitoring of all forms of risk including systemic, strategic, competitive, reputational, operational, regulatory and market risks.

What will you need to succeed?

Must Have:
• Minimum 2 years of Group Underwriting and Risk Selection experience, with a preference of University degree, related industry designations, and educational credentials
• Proven leadership, mentoring and coaching skills
• Strong knowledge and in-depth understanding of Group Product features, Group Underwriting principles, funding arrangements, experience rating models and exposure to both small and large case market
• Excellent understanding and knowledge of the Group Insurance Industry and the nature of the competitive marketplace
• Dedication to customer service, ability to deal with all levels of stakeholders and develop effective relationships
• Excellent communication, organizational and presentation skills

• Preference of 2+ years of progressive management experience
• Management of top-line and bottom-line growth
• Demonstrated initiative and drive. Experience in implementing best practices
• Awareness of technology capabilities and solutions that would support the needs of the business or create new business opportunities
