Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) - Midwest Region

Location Requirement:
This position is based in the Chicago, IL area and operates in a remote work environment. The successful candidate must reside within reasonable proximity to a major airport and be able to travel extensively throughout the assigned region. Regular travel to TTX repair facilities, operational sites, satellite locations, and the LDC is required.

Travel Requirement:
This position supports over 19 railcar repair and operational facilities, 2 satellite sites, and one LDC throughout the Midwest Region. Candidates should expect approximately 75% travel, including frequent overnight travel, to conduct facility visits, inspections, investigations, training, audits, and compliance activities. Mileage and business travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with company policy.

Job Summary

Carry out the day-to-day operations of the EHS department and contribute to the application of effective Health, Safety, and Environmental management by providing technical support, regulatory guidance, compliance oversight, and safety leadership across multiple facilities.

Facility Specific Responsibilities (but not limited to)
  • Serve as the lead EHS advisor for Midwest Region facilities and oversee the performance, development, and strategic alignment of the South Region EHS Supervisor.
  • Provide EHS support to 19 railcar repair and operational facilities, DRACO and one LDC.
  • Travel extensively throughout the region to establish EHS presence and provide hands-on support.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly EHS meetings and training sessions as needed.
  • Support implementation and management of EHS programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform facility EHS inspections and compliance audits.
  • Evaluate PPE requirements and ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE.
  • Enforce compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, FRA, and other federal, state, and local regulations), as well as company EHS policies and procedures.
  • Oversee hazardous waste storage areas and ensure regulatory compliance, including labeling, containment, disposal, and documentation.
  • Perform and oversee environmental compliance activities, including storm water discharge sampling and documentation.
  • Assist with emergency response activities and provide first aid treatment when necessary.
  • Lead and support Behavior-Based Safety and Observation Safety Programs.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Administer the Fall Protection Program, conduct equipment inspections, and maintain required records.
  • Travel approximately 75% of the time to support assigned facilities with training, inspections, investigations, audits, meetings, and compliance activities.
  • Oversee safety incentive and engagement programs.
  • Assist in administering and maintaining compliance programs such as Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plans (EAP), Hearing Conservation, Hot Work, Respiratory Protection, Bloodborne Pathogens, and other applicable safety programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the EHS Director.

  • Must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field and a minimum of Five years of experience in an Environmental, Health & Safety role within a heavy manufacturing, transportation, industrial, or rail industry environment. Technical writing experience is a plus.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or transport up to 25 pounds. Correctable vision is required for close, distance, and depth perception capabilities, and the ability to adjust focus.
