We are looking for you to join our team as an Embedded Software Engineering Manager based out of San Diego, CA.

What You'll Get to Do:

The embedded SW engineering manager will lead a section of approximately 10-15 software engineers working within the San Diego Engineering and Sciences (E&S) Software and Digital Technologies (SWDT) department. The successful candidate will lead direct report employees based on organizational goals, program activity, and company policies. Specific responsibilities include coordinating with programs for staffing, recruiting, training, preparing and delivering performance reviews to employees, evaluating/recommending employees for promotions, evaluating salaries and coordinating with Human Resources on potential adjustments, assisting employees in preparing performance goals, providing career guidance to employees and counseling employees on their performance as necessary. Program Execution and Engineering Excellence are our driving forces.

The qualified candidate shall also be a technical performer, working approximately 80% directly on programs involving communications systems within our F-35, F-22, CNI Production, Advanced Communications, or Small Forms Factors operating units (OU), representing our Engineering and Sciences organization.

This manager will support and be accountable for goals including:
  • Cultivate an inclusive and engaging workplace. Ensure employees' work life balance is appropriate.
  • Workforce: maintain staff adequate to execute to program plans, as well as for strategic growth. Plan assignments and fill program needs to ensure success, but which also offer growth to the individuals performing the work.
  • Performance management: on an ongoing basis engage with staff to identify growth opportunities, deficiencies, appropriate training, etc. Execute to the Enterprise review cycle. Manage compensation and career progression.
  • Support the creation, updating, and maintenance of software engineering processes.


Basic Qualifications:
  • BS + 5 years of exp in related STEM field; MS + 3 years of exp.
  • Proficiency in C/C++, Object Oriented programming, and software lifecycle processes
  • Candidate must have excellent written, communication, and emotional intelligence skills, and be able to work independently and within groups.
  • Ability to facilitate/mediate in conflict resolution matters.
  • Must have an active Secret Clearance
  • Candidate must be able to work on site at the Rancho Carmel facility.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS in Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field, with 8 or more years of technical experience.
  • Current direct program duties within the Communications Solutions (CS) Business Unit (BU), including F-22, F-35, CNI, and Advanced Communications.
  • Previous experience as a functional manager or technical team leader
  • Experience integrating low-level firmware and software in complex real-time multi-threaded embedded applications
  • Experience with RTOS designs and implementing secure software for embedded systems
  • Experience with ARM architecture and peripherals
  • Experience using Jira/Bitbucket/Git and the Agile software development process
  • Experience with Communication Protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, Ethernet)
  • Experience with Networking protocols (IPSec, TLS)
  • Experience with TCP/IP and common network configurations
  • Experience implementing cryptographic mechanisms using dedicated software libraries (wolfSSL)
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel driver development/modifications
  • Familiarity with assembly language
  • Familiarity with bare metal embedded device drivers
  • Familiarity with PowerPC architectures and peripherals
  • Familiarity with VHDL/Verilog/FPGA
  • Familiarity with Xilinx tools (Vitis, Vivado)
  • Familiarity with IBM tools (Rhapsody, DOORS, Clearcase)
  • Familiarity with Green Hills AdaMulti
  • Familiarity with Static Analysis and Unit Testing
  • DOD Top Secret and SAR highly preferred


Primary Level Salary Range: $133,000.00 - $199,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
