The Manager of Data Engineering leads the design, development, and operations of Starkey's enterprise data engineering platforms and core data warehouse, while steering their evolution toward a modern hybrid architecture. This role combines deep technical leadership, team development, and cross-functional partnership to deliver reliable and scalable data solutions that support global 24/7 operations.

JOB SUMMARY DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB

The Manager of Data Engineering is responsible for leading the design, development, and operations of Starkey's enterprise data engineering and core data warehouse. This role oversees data integration, transformation, and movement across cloud and on-premise platforms. This role manages a team of software developers and data engineers across experience levels and partners closely with source-system and analytics teams to ensure data reliability and accessibility. The team provides 24/7 operational support for Starkey's headquarters and global facilities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/RESULTS

Provide ongoing leadership, oversight and alignment of IT's data engineering services to meet business operational needs

Prioritize and lead the work of the team

    • Prioritization of sprint tasks
    • Assist in estimating work from a planning perspective
    • Monitor team from a quality perspective and ensure processes are established and followed


Hire and develop direct reports

    • Collaborate with employees and leadership to support career development and growth
    • Identify and provide learning opportunities to ensure the team remains current with evolving technologies


Lead the evolution of the Starkey core data warehouse

    • Apply modern data architecture principles to enhance Starkey's data warehousing capabilities
    • Together with the Enterprise Analytics team, develop and execute a roadmap transitioning from traditional warehousing to a hybrid architecture with a data warehouse, data lake(s), and SaaS data services
    • Lead the team through this transition


Provide architectural/design guidance and support to data consumers

    • Collaborate with the Enterprise Analytics team and other stakeholders to understand desired outcomes and propose solutions to achieve those results
    • Support data cataloging and other corporate data initiatives


Provide architectural/integration guidance regarding ETL and data sources

    • Identify and anticipate source data requirements
    • Develop ETL architecture standards and policies and develop ETL processes for the organization
    • Support data quality standards and drive initiatives to cleanse data


Manage the team's interaction with internal customers and servicing of work requests and incidents

    • Collaborate with business and IT partners to understand their needs and define data requirements and models.
    • Lead the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources to meet customer needs
    • Ensure follow-up with customers to certify that the resolution of problems maintains customer satisfaction.
    • Lead the establishment and maintenance of KPIs for team performance and service delivery


Stay current with data technologies

    • Maintain expertise and vendor relationships in our primary data tools
    • Research and evaluate new technologies and recommend improvements
    • Mentor and coach peers on new technologies

Education

    • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience required.


Experience

    • 7+ years' experience as a Data Engineer, ETL Developer, Data Architect, or Database Administrator.
    • 4+ years' experience specifically with ETL and data warehousing.
    • 4+ years' experience in a manager or technical leadership role.


Knowledge / Technical Requirements

    • Strong knowledge of databases and performance monitoring/management tools
    • Expertise in data warehousing techniques, design, and best practices
    • Knowledge of data lake/lakehouse concepts
    • Experience with cloud data platforms

WORK CONTEXT

Working Conditions

    • Standard office environment. This position participates in a 24/7 on-call rotation. The rotation schedule varies based on team size


Salary and Other Compensation:

The target pay rate for this position is between $121,660 - $147,000 annually. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include: geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is eligible for a bonus based upon performance results. There is no guarantee of payout.
