Candidates are expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance (typically 25-35 miles) of Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN.

Global Merchant and Network Services (GMNS) is the merchant network of American Express that acquires and maintains relationships with millions of merchants around the world who welcome American Express-branded Cards. The Merchant Acquisition and Supplier Enablement (MASE) team within GMNS is a nationwide organization comprised of over 160 professionals dedicated to signing and enabling U.S. merchants for AXP Card acceptance.

The Manager of Business Development (MBD) is a direct sales position on the District Sales team within Merchant Acquisition. This position will focus on high value prospects that have an annual sales revenue up to $10B within B2B verticals and segments that do not currently accept the Card as a form of payment. This role will also work closely with our Global Commercial Services (GCS) and the Regional Centralized Client Management teams to expand B2B coverage, drive charge volume, and a focus on Welcomed Acceptance. The successful candidate will use his/ her in-depth knowledge of American Express and target industries to partner with prospects and internal stakeholders across the blue box to devise and implement innovative deal constructs to unlock previously untapped opportunities.

This position is assigned to a geographic sales territory. To ensure effective client coverage and business continuity, colleagues are expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance (typically 25-35 miles) of an approved primary or secondary metropolitan area associated with the territory. Residency and territory alignment may be reviewed periodically based on business needs, market coverage requirements, and territory assignments.

The colleague is expected to regularly travel throughout the territory to conduct in-person client meetings, prospecting activities, and relationship management. Residence location must support efficient and consistent coverage of the assigned market and will be considered as part of the selection and placement process.

  • Lead the full acquisition process within your territory, targeting high-value Middle clients through strategic, consultative selling.
  • Build and sustain executive-level relationships with CEOs, CFOs, and financial leaders - positioning American Express as their partner of choice for growth and efficiency.
  • Leverage your market intelligence, network, and industry insight to identify, develop, and convert new business opportunities.
  • Maintain a strong in-market presence with 25-50% travel, ensuring personal engagement with the clients who matter most.


Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Track record of conceiving, structuring, selling in, and implementing creative, innovative deals
  • Ensures proper business process, conduct and compliance controls and adherence
  • Demonstrated ability to form relationships and drive consensus with key internal stakeholders, including pricing, legal, Card issuers, Risk, and other internal partners
  • Strong financial acumen. Excellent financial and analytical skills used to prepare and present quantitative analyses to prospects.
  • Strong primary and secondary account/ industry research skills; demonstrated ability to leverage professional network and third-party sources to develop deep understanding of prospect needs, anticipated objections, and potential leverage points
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong executive presence.
  • Strong negotiation skills; demonstrated ability in building rapport and earning credibility with prospects.
  • Flexible; comfortable in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and changes in direction.
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of successful outside sales experience.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce.com an asset.
  • Candidate must reside in the designated territory
