Description:Manager Biomedical Engineering
Position Summary Plans, manages, and oversees daily activities of Biomedical Engineering Department at assigned center to ensure effective use, maintenance, and repair of Hospital medical equipment in accordance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and establish procedure.
Essential Job Duties - Plans, coordinates, and manages department operations to ensure timely and effective repair, calibration, and maintenance of center-wide medical equipment in accordance with prescribed safety standards and regulatory agency requirements. Develops, formalizes, and implements procedures and methods for testing and calibrating medical equipment. Monitors and oversees department activities to ensure effective maintenance and emergency repair of medical devices.
- Directs and oversees departmental personnel to ensure effective staffing, work allocation and coordination; completes performance evaluations and take appropriate personnel actions. Provides work direction. Interprets and implements hospital personnel and departmental policies and procedures.
- Designs and implements appropriate quality control and preventive maintenance programs and conducts follow-up to ensure effectiveness of department activities. Investigates equipment-related accidents and safety hazards to determine cause and corrective or preventive measures. Implements and maintains safety standards to ensure maximum protection for patients and employees.
- Maintains effective communication with medical staff, administration and department heads, outside agencies and appropriate others to ensure effective operations. Coordinates activities with patient care and other Hospital departments to ensure timely and effective service delivery. Addresses job related inquiries, handles problems. Participates on various Hospital-wide committees related to patient-care equipment, patient and employee safety, equipment standards and utilization and facilities.
- Identifies and submits departmental goals and objectives for approval. Monitors progress to ensure achievements of approved goals.
- Manages medical equipment installation programs. Coordinates medical equipment installation with facilities department to ensure patient care areas meet equipment needs and regulatory requirements.
- Oversees and coordinates with the purchase and maintenance of inventory of parts and supplies for department; confers with vendors as necessary to negotiate or coordinate purchases. Conducts pre-purchase engineering evaluation of various medical equipment to determine safety and reliability. Makes appropriate recommendation to Hospital management. Identifies and introduces labor savings test equipment, tools and methods to facilitate repair and maintenance activities.
- Assists in the development of the departmental operating budget. Monitors manpower and expense reports, investigate variances, and take appropriate measures to ensure budget adherence. Participates in 24 hour on call program.
- Assists with developing, assessment and implementations of technology utilization and procurement programs such as fixed and mobile equipment procurement, utilization and life cycle support.
- Responsible for developing, implementing and tracking department service standards and customer satisfaction benchmarks.

- Develops and implements technology business plans for the entire organization including detailed financial models. Works closely with Finance leadership to determine the appropriate financing solutions.
- Participates in the development and implementation of Corporate Technology policies and procedures; functions as the technology leader to ensure regulatory (e.g. Joint Commission) compliance.
- Develops and implements technology management programs including Asset Management programs to reduce financial risk. Manages corporate technology support budgets to optimize cost benefit.
- Develops, assesses, and implements technology utilization and procurement programs such as fixed and mobile equipment procurement, utilization, and life cycle support. Develops implements a strategic technology and medical equipment planning process for short and long term technology and medical equipment planning and replacement (e.g., OTAM, Service Line, OFD, Office of the CIO, etc.).
- Develops and implements technology assessment models for the assessment, procurement, system integration, life cycle management, and disposition of technology investments through the Office of Performance Excellence.
- Maintains a network-wide inventory database of biomedical devices, interfaces, and information systems. Uses inventory to establish a database for the effective disposition of assets network-wide as well as to ensure the safe and effective use of equipment.
- Reports on technology management activities to corporate committees and senior management. Interacts regularly with all levels of management as required. Responsible for developing, implementing, and tracking departmental service standards and customer satisfaction benchmarks.
- Responsible for the development and growth of the department's Network Shared Services program which includes marketing, business development, proposal generation, sales closure, and program implementation. Provides oversight to on-going program quality.
- Performs all duties inherent to managerial role. Participates in hiring, training, evaluation and termination of assigned staff according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired - Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or biomedical equipment or equivalent knowledge or education
- Previous experience as clinical or biomedical engineer in testing and maintenance of all types of biomedical equipment
- Has at least ten years of related experience in healthcare technology management, the last three of which should be in a senior leadership role
Preferred - International Certification Commission (ICC) BMET Certification
