JOB SUMMARY:

The pipeline infrastructure constructed by Southern Company Gas' Construction Operations organization is fundamental to our success, enabling the safe, reliable, and affordable delivery of natural gas services to millions of customers.

The Construction Area Manager leads frontline leaders responsible for overseeing construction management, inspection teams, service providers, and other resources that execute programs consisting of large-scale construction projects as well as some smaller construction projects within a regional area. This role carries accountability for the successful delivery of construction assets, ensuring performance in safety, quality, schedule adherence, budget management, and regulatory and code compliance.

Construction Area Manager oversee individual capital projects with construction values of up to $50-$100 million or manage portfolios of projects with annual construction budgets totaling up to $50-$100 million. Depending on business priorities, the assigned portfolio may include gas distribution projects supporting new business growth or system improvements and gas transmission initiatives involving pipeline expansion and integrity management.

This position is responsible for supporting Georgia and Tennessee. Candidates may have some flexibility in location but must be located within the company's territory.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • **Active Construction Projects: **
    • Interfacing with Contractor's Management
    • Contract administration: holding contractors to all terms and conditions of Construction Agreements (MSA, SOW); change management (RFI/CO), amendments, quantity tracking
    • Tracking/presenting construction metrics
    • Tracking construction cash flows, inspection/NDE costs, schedule milestones
    • Leading/facilitating weekly redline and construction data review and reconciliation
    • Dotted-line leadership of environmental management
    • Walkdowns and punch lists
    • Approval of Redline, Pressure Test, Weld Log, Material Log, Completion Report
    • Review and post projects to bid
    • Review and approval of Flow Interruption Plans
  • **Future Projects: **
    • Constructability reviews; cost estimates at each stage (currently being performed by Distribution managers)
    • Gate review presentations
    • Leading construction contractor sourcing processes: preparing RFP documents, pre-bid meetings, Q&A, clarifications, pricing analysis, scorecard, and award recommendation (currently being performed by Distribution managers)

Communication Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with leadership in Engineering, Project Management, Land, Permitting, Environmental
  • Presents to upper-level leadership
  • Demonstrates effective working relationships across all levels, both in-person and virtually
  • Interprets pipeline contracts to negotiate with service providers and develop sustainable partnerships
  • Manages high-profile customer jobs with timely upward communication and appropriate resource planning
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Sets team goals, provides feedback, and supports professional development and strategic initiatives
  • Leads construction teams toward capital spend, schedule, safety, quality, and installation targets

  • Manage contracts and capital projects through all stages including SOW development, bid processes, scheduling, risk management, and budget monitoring


Qualifications

Education Requirements
  • Required: HSD or GED, Driver's License
  • Preferred: BA/BS degree in construction management or business, engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, petroleum).
  • Preferred: PMP or PMI-CP, CWI, CPWI
Experience - Basic Requirements
  • Required: 8 years of experience industrial or utility construction or operations, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory role. Natural gas infrastructure construction experience preferred.
Required Experience and Knowledge Related to Construction
  • Required: demonstrated success in a supervisory-level role leading resources toward operational goals and natural gas construction experience.
  • Preferred:
    • experience in construction contract creation, RFP bidding/awarding, and contract administration.
    • knowledge of gas infrastructure construction equipment and techniques, inspection, welding non-destructive examination, directional drilling, OSHA standards, and PHMSA regulations.
    • experience in stage-gated asset development processes, budgeting, estimating, scheduling.
Required Communication, Software, and Analytical Skills
  • Required: strong written and verbal communication skills with all levels from executives to construction personnel.
  • Required: intermediate proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to quickly learn and leverage internal business systems.
  • Required: intermediate to high analytical skills, ability to recognize issues, evaluate options using data and facts, and implement solutions.
OTHER DETAILS:
Work Location
  • This position is office based but may be a field-office depending on the needs of the project or program and the reporting location will be continuously variable depending on the location of the assigned projects. Persons in this position may self-direct their reporting location, either on-site or remote, at their own discretion subject to their leader's approval.
On-Call Duties
  • This position may periodically be required to be on-call for nights, weekends, and holidays to respond to emergency situations, depending on the LDC.

Physical Conditions
  • This position will be exposed to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, mud, prolonged standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, reaching, kneeling/bending, and other environmental hazards related to construction. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided and must be worn.
Travel
  • This position may require frequent travel to project sites several hours away from the person's home. Overnight travel may be required up to 10-20% of the time.
Vehicle
  • This position requires the use of a Company vehicle so valid drivers license required.
