The firearm industry is a considered a retail business. As such, expect to work Black Friday and Christmas Eve. Leave restrictions are set in place during the holiday shopping season and during the Valentine's Day/tax season.
All NICS employees are considered essential employees. This means you will be expected to work holidays and weekends. Additionally, as an essential employee, you should also be prepared to travel to work even during inclement weather.
Also, when the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Section experiences an extremely high volume of firearm background checks, employees are sometimes required to work a set number of mandatory overtime hours. Management attempts to provide as much notice as possible when overtime will be mandated.

UNIT DESCRIPTION
The NICS Support Services Unit (NSSU) provides support to all NICS users, internal and external. The NSSU liaises between NICS users and the Information Technology Management Section, prioritizes system enhancements, manages the contracted call centers, updates and maintains NICS statistics, produces trend analysis, and provides system management.
The NICS Assessment and Training Unit (NATU) provides continual support and improvement to the NICS Section by performing quality control reviews of NICS transactions; conducting studies to continually improve processes and practices; and providing training, mentoring and region lead services to NICS Section employees.
KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Because this position involves conducting background checks for individuals wanting to purchase firearms, to avoid any actual or even a appearance of a conflict of interest, employees and contractors in this position are not permitted to hold a current Federal Firearms License (FFL) or otherwise be employed by an FFL. Any newly hired employee, or a contractor, holding an FFL or otherwise employed by an FFL, would be required to relinquish that FFL or employment if offered this position. If someone in the employee's (or contractor's) immediate family holds or is otherwise associated with an FFL, an assessment would need to be conducted to determine if a conflict of interest exists.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Serves as a senior analyst responsible for providing advice to executives, managers, and operational personnel by performing functions which include planning, research, analysis, and administrative management functions addressing complex issues relative to the Bureau.
  • Plans, researches, and analyzes a broad range of management/program functions addressing diverse and complex duties related to a wide array of administrative management issues including, but not limited to, budget and financial management, compliance management, forecasting and planning, management, policy development, program development and assessment, strategic planning, and/or data analytics that have a direct impact on operations and missions.
  • Conducts complex studies that require the analysis of interrelated issues of effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity that affect FBI administrative programs; provides recommendations to problems that impact program goals/objectives; performs appraisal of the utilization of resources in accomplishing objectives and goals; recommends new and/or changes to existing policies; and prepares short-range plans in accordance with FBI policies and directives.
  • Conducts complex process management/program analyses to identify inefficiencies, streamline processes, eliminate redundancies, and ensure processes meet valid administrative/program requirements.
  • Researches past practices, laws, procedures, and other regulatory materials in order to resolve complex, difficult, and/or controversial problems/issues that require care in their review, analysis, and resolution.
  • Prepares, presents, and defends recommendations and findings to management in written reports, memoranda, executive summaries, and analytical narratives. These may serve as the basis for decisions regarding the continuation, re-direction, or termination of projects.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
