Job Description

The Radiology Department is a specialty medical service that offers a wide range of imaging techniques to diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions. The Diagnostic Section utilizes ionizing radiation through the use x-rays, radiography and fluoroscopy. At UCSF Medical Center, we offer the full spectrum of techniques, using the most advanced equipment. Combined with Bone Densitometry, Mammography, CT scans, MRI, PET, Ultrasound and Interventional we perform more than 500,000 procedures annually. In fact, a number of radiology advancements and applications were developed here.

The Radiology Supervisor in Mammography is responsible for having a current CRT with the State of California and a current Mammography Certification with the State of California. Supervises all technologists and ancillary support staff under their direct supervision, training new employees, organizing the work flow, coordination of daily work schedules and shift coverage, knowledgeable in all procedures, and enhancing image quality. They are accountable for overseeing day-to-day operations of the Imaging department and ensuring safe, efficient care of patients while maintaining fiscal responsibility for staff and supply levels.

They are responsible for the productivity of the department and staff. Strong leadership skills are essential. The ability to effectively communicate with staff, patients and family members as well as physicians and other health care providers is required.

The supervisor is a role-model and ambassador for the department and must provide exception customer service and service recoveries. Responsible for attending various operations, safety and scheduling meetings and communicating essential information to the staff.

A.LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISION

1. Supervises employees in their daily work assignments and responsible for the workflow in the department.
2. Monitors the schedules and maintains adequate staffing for the shifts that the supervisor is responsible for. Make the necessary calls to maintain adequate coverage. Follows procedures from one shift to another for coverage of sick and tardiness. Works with the Associate Chief for ensuring adequate coverage at all times.
3. Working supervisor assists with procedures and patient care.
4. Responsible for training of staff to create a positive work environment and increase job skills. Uses appropriate forms for orientation and equipment orientation.
5. Reviews and evaluates job performances on an ongoing basis, communicates any job performance issues to employee and to the Associate Chief in a timely manner.
6. Completes written performance appraisals, completed and given by the appraisal due date.
7. Maintains current licenses and certifications for all technologists.
8. Organizes the workflow according to the degree of urgency and or acuity level.
9. Coordinates patient examinations that have special circumstances and or multiple examinations that have to interface with other radiology sections or departments.
10. Facilitates patient transport.
11. Monitors and insures equitable distribution of workload and work assignments for employees.
12. Assigns lunch and break relief.
13. Maintains patient waiting times to a minimum by exercising good planning and organization to achieve maximum utilization of resources that are assigned. Maintains flexibility in the daily routine in order to handle the unexpected problem.
14. Coaches and instructs the technologist as necessary in correct performance of department procedures, film quality, patient positioning and proper use of equipment. Encourages teamwork and cooperation.
15. Answers telephone inquiries or requests and communicate information to coordinate and/or facilitate the department's services.
16. Participates in the interview process for hiring new employees by making recommendations.
17. Performs in a timely manner the disciplinary action process.
18. Operates and displays expertise and skill in the use of all radiology equipment in the department. Is current on all procedures and troubleshooting of equipment problems.

1. Is knowledgeable and enforces UCSF and department policies and procedures. Keeps current on patient safety to include electrical, mechanical, fire, safety and disaster procedures.

3. Assures that work environment is clean and in compliance with infection control and environmental health and safety standards.

6. Is a role model by maintaining a professional, neat appearance and adhering to the department dress code policy. Displays the hospital identification badge and radiation badge at all times.
7. Enforces established department and hospital guidelines for attendance and tardiness.
8. Consistent with training, UCSF Medical Center Policies, and the TUGs Operations Manual, Nuclear Medicine - PET/CT at Mission Bay may receive TUGs; removes, distributes and/or places contents in appropriate storage areas; cleans and disinfects TUGs; deploys TUGs; returns TUGs to appropriate holding areas.

C.INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

1. Demonstrates competency in the Radiology Information System EPIC, APeX, RADIANT, Sectra
2. Demonstrates competency in the Radiology Information System for the selection of the Visit Number.
3. Insures clinical data is correct and appropriate for specific procedures being requested.
4. Utilizes hospital/department computers for hospital business only.
5. Demonstrates confidentiality using own password.
6. Demonstrates competency in the Radiology Department PAC's System.
7. Ensures that all exams in the radiology computer system are completed following the procedure and that they are coded correctly.

D.DEVELOPMENT

1. Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice. Maintains current licensure and completion of all required continuing education.
2. Attends assigned staff development activities for the department.
3. Participates in cross training activities when necessary.
4. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.
5. Attends professional meetings or seminars to keep current within the field of Radiology or supervisory/management.
6. Complies with and enforces the department employee expectations and standards.

1. E. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

1. Assures that the performance and documentation of the Daily, Monthly, or Annual Quality Control tests are complete and accurate. Reports any non-compliance to the appropriate resource.
2. Insures that appropriate documentation occurs and reporting of incidents in a timely manner regarding patients, employees and physicians. This includes patient and employee injuries.
3. Participates in and encourages staff participation in the department's Performance Improvement activities.

F.BUDGETARY

1. Responsible for maintaining adequate level of supplies in the department. Orders supplies when necessary.
2. Responsible for knowledge and compliance with the budget and staffing standards.
3. Identifies opportunities for cost containment.
4. Communicates any suggestions to increase productivity or quality of work.
5. Assures patient information and billing codes are appropriate. At the end of the shift, all billing is complete.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

• Clinical practice knowledge and applied background in a mammography modality. Knowledge of terms, concepts, and protocols. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge in an acute care setting to improve operations.
• 2-3 years of current or previous supervisory skills
• 10 years of imaging experience. Previous management or supervisory experience in in healthcare environment is preferred.
• Flexibility in scheduling, ability to rotate shifts, sites and Lead coverage for weekends and holidays
• Ensures compliance with licensing and regulatory standards (Federal, State, and ACR) in Mammography including assurance of accurate audit of required statistics. Manage and help implement appropriate data collection of information needed to monitor clinical, operational, and financial outcomes, as well as MQSA QA/QC standards. Strong experience in regulatory FDA and MQSA QA/QC standards.
• Ability to organize division operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving Radiology processes, protocols, databases, and technology.
• Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, researchers, radiology technologists, and other clinical staff. Interpersonal skills to work with a variety of patient populations and show sensitivity.
• Interpersonal skills to collaborate within and across departments.
• Skills to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues and software malfunctions in order to contact appropriate service personnel. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions within defined procedures and policies through critical thinking
• Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement.
• Verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate through all mediums and with all groups. Demonstrated abilities to listen actively, persuade, advise, and counsel.
• Maintain and update the Breast Imaging Policy and Procedure manual.
• Direct responsibility of personnel performance evaluations for Breast Imaging.
• Collaborates with Regional Radiology managers regarding performance and reviews.
• Provides assistance in making decisions on appropriate staffing, termination, and other personnel activities. Plans, implements, and evaluates staff development.
• Demonstrates competency in the following procedures: Cyst aspirations, Abscess drainage, Fine Needle Aspirations, Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsies, Stereotactic Core Biopsies to include specimen collection, Post stereo procedure Imaging for clip placement, Pre-surgical wire localizations under ultrasound guidance, pre-surgical wire localization freehand and grid with mammography guidance involving imaging breast with needle in place, pre-surgical wire localizations under stereotactic guidance to include wire imaging, ductograms and surgical specimen radiography. Magnetic seed placement under ultrasound, mammographic, and stereotactic guidance.

Required Certifications/Licensures:

• CRT Mammography (M)
• CRT Requires (CRT) California Radiology Technologist
• AHA BLS

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• 2-3 years previous supervisory skills
• ARRT

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
