Georgia-Pacific's Continuous Manufacturing Group is seeking qualified candidates to consider for a Logistics Manager opportunity at our containerboard mill in Big Island, VA.

The Logistics Manager is responsible for execution of efficient material movements in and out of the facility while leading the development of front-line leaders and hourly associates. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, process-oriented, technically competent, and customer-focused with a passion for excellence in safety/environmental, reliability, quality, production, supply chain and logistics. Must possess strong leadership and communication skills to effectively interact with employees, other departments, suppliers, and customers.

Our Team

Georgia-Pacific's Big Island, VA containerboard mill is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the James River and produces the paper used to make boxes. Half of the production is made from 100% recycle fiber and the other half uses about 25% recycle fiber. In 2015, a $50 million upgrade enabled the production of a higher return product. The mill employs about 330 people. The Logistics Manager will report to the Operations Manager and guide a team of shipping and logistics professionals at the site.

What You Will Do

  • Lead a team of roughly 25 employees (direct and indirect reports) in goal setting and performance for the logistics/shipping department.
  • Responsible for ensuring the understanding and application of Principle Based Management® on your team
  • Ensure team is actively involved in safety training and discussions to reduce opportunities for injury and property damage
  • Facilitate collaboration for the Big Island mill site with corporate transportation, planning, and deployment functions.
  • Responsible for the management of inventory best practices to include cycle counting, safety stock management, storage best practices, FIFO, etc.
  • Responsible for safe and reliable operations of shipping vehicles. This includes manually operated mobile lift trucks.
  • Identify and execute cost savings opportunities through increased direct shipments (transfer avoidance), waste reduction, labor flow to work, etc.
  • Ensure all raw material movements are executed by team to ensure quality product and to avoid delay on production assets


Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience in a supply chain/logistics function
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience


What Will Put You Ahead

  • Experience applying Lean principles in a shipping/logistics environment such as Kanban, RCA, value stream mapping, Leader Standard Work, etc.
  • Experience in manufacturing production and/or material planning functions
