Full Job Description
The New York City Law Department's Litigation Support Division is seeking an attorney who will be assigned to work at 100 Church Street to assist in obtaining discovery sought from other City agencies by the New York City Law Department. The Law Department's lawyers handle more than 80,000 cases and transactions each year and represent the City on a vast array of civil litigation and in the criminal prosecution of juveniles. The Law Department also counsels the Mayor, elected officials, the City, and all its agencies. The attorney will: interact with other Assistant Corporation Counsels and professional staff to assist with all aspects of discovery from other City agencies for the Law Department; assist in the supervision of Litigation Support staff in conducting paper and electronic discovery; learn the IT systems of the Law Department and other agencies in order to assist with the collection of electronically stored information; learn the operational functions of other City agencies including the records created and maintained by those operational units; and work under the supervision of division management. The attorney may be assigned to work on-site at the assigned agency, but that is subject to change based on space availability. The position may require travel to other agency locations to information map. Salary Information The Law Department sets salaries for new attorneys based on their post law school legal experience, which typically aligns with their law school graduation year. - For 0-5 years of legal experience: $ 87,737-$122,300 - For 5-10 years of legal experience: $122,300-137,188 - For 10-15 years of legal experience: $137,188-$159,521 - For 15-20 years of legal experience: $159,521-$180,791 - For 20+ years of legal experience: $180,791-$188,235 Candidates with highly specialized experience may qualify for salaries slightly above these ranges when a role requires such expertise or the position is considered hard to fill. Work From Home Options Following orientation, attorneys may elect to participate in one of two remote work programs: 1. Flexible Remote Work: Allows limited, irregular work from home days. 2. Citywide Pilot Program: Allows attorneys to work remotely on two set days per week, subject to Division approval and staffing needs. Participants must maintain a single designated remote work location, and in person obligations take precedence over scheduled remote days. This pilot is currently being tested across City agencies and is not yet permanent. Minimum Qualification Requirements Candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and be admitted and in good standing with the New York State Bar. Candidates should also have at least three years of litigation and discovery experience. Strong organizational, oral communication, and writing skills are required. Prior supervisory experience is preferred. Strong communication skills are necessary in the role, including the ability to interact with and develop collaborative relationships with both Law Department and Agency personnel and management. Preferred Skills Hands on experience and strong technical skills with the following applications: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint); Adobe Acrobat; document management systems, and Microsoft SharePoint.
