Linux Systems Administrator provides systems administration, infrastructure support, and operational sustainment for the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) Enhanced Mission Integration (AEMI) program. This position is responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Linux-based mission-critical computing environments supporting tactical networks, mission systems, and Special Operations Forces (SOF). The
Linux Systems Administrator supports software and hardware integration, cybersecurity compliance, system modernization, developmental and operational testing, and fielding activities while ensuring the availability, security, and performance of enterprise and tactical computing environments.
Responsibilities- Install, configure, administer, maintain, and troubleshoot Linux operating systems supporting development, test, and operational mission environments.
- Perform routine systems administration activities including account management, software installation, operating system patching, performance tuning, security hardening, and configuration management.
- Maintain physical servers, virtual servers, workstations, storage devices, virtual machines, and mission support infrastructure.
- Execute system backup, restoration, disaster recovery, and continuity of operations procedures to ensure system availability and data integrity.
- Monitor system health, performance, capacity, and availability using enterprise monitoring and management tools.
- Diagnose and resolve Linux operating system, application, hardware, storage, and infrastructure issues affecting mission operations.
- Support the operation, maintenance, and administration of tactical and enterprise network environments.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain mission applications, communications software, middleware, system utilities, and supporting software components.
- Apply operating system updates, kernel patches, firmware updates, security fixes, and configuration changes in accordance with Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements.
- Support Developmental Test (DT), Operational Test (OT), and Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) activities through system preparation, configuration, troubleshooting, and technical support.
- Assist with system installations, software deployment, system imaging, technology refresh initiatives, and software load development activities.
- Assist with Implement Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), Security Requirements Guides (SRGs), vulnerability remediation activities, and other cybersecurity controls.
- Develop and maintain Linux automation scripts utilizing Bash, Python, or similar scripting languages to improve system administration and operational efficiency.
- Maintain technical documentation including system configurations, standard operating procedures, installation guides, inventories, and configuration baselines.
- Collaborate with software developers, systems engineers, network engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and government stakeholders to ensure reliable system operations.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, tools, and infrastructure improvements supporting mission effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Defense cybersecurity policies, configuration management requirements, and organizational security procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in information technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education, military training, and relevant professional experience.
- 3+ years of professional experience performing Linux systems administration, information technology, network administration, or mission systems support.
- Current DoD 8570/8140 Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II certification.
- Linux systems administration certification such as:
- CompTIA Linux+
- Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC)
- Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
- Comparable Linux administration certification
- Active Top Secret clearance
- Successfully pass background and drug screening
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience administering Linux operating systems in enterprise or Department of Defense environments.
- Experience supporting Windows operating systems and hybrid Windows/Linux environments.
- Experience administering enterprise servers, virtual machines, storage systems, and networked computing environments.
- Knowledge of operating system administration, security hardening, account management, backup and recovery, and system monitoring.
- Experience implementing Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements.
- Ability to troubleshoot operating system, application, hardware, storage, and infrastructure issues
- 5+ years of experience supporting Department of Defense, Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), or other military organizations.
- Experience administering VMware, Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or other virtualization and cloud computing platforms.
- Knowledge of enterprise networking principles including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, firewalls, and network security.
- Experience supporting tactical communications systems, mission planning applications, command and control (C2), or C4ISR environments.
- Experience supporting Agile software development and DevSecOps environments.
- Industry certifications such as:
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect
- Microsoft Azure Administrator
- Certified Scrum Developer (CSD)
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
- Comparable industry-recognized certifications
- Experience supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), decision-support, or advanced data analytics environments.
- Server administration certification such as CompTIA Server+ or equivalent is desirable
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:- Advanced knowledge of Linux operating systems, enterprise systems administration, and server management.
- Knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu, CentOS, and enterprise Linux administration.
- Knowledge of shell scripting, automation tools, and systems management utilities.
- Knowledge of virtualization technologies, cloud computing, and hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Knowledge of enterprise networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory integration, and network troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of Department of Defense cybersecurity policies, Information Assurance requirements, and STIG implementation.
- Ability to install, configure, secure, maintain, and troubleshoot Linux-based enterprise computing environments.
- Ability to automate routine administrative functions using scripting languages and system management tools.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex hardware, software, operating system, and infrastructure issues.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, enterprise monitoring tools, virtualization platforms, and Linux administration utilities.
