Precision Tune Technician PT01B
Lead / Master Technician - Back Shop Leadership Role

Precision Tune Auto Care - Opelika, AL

Precision Tune Auto Care - Opelika is seeking an experienced Lead / Master Technician to step into a key leadership role within our back shop. This position is designed for a technician who wants more than a traditional flat-rate role - someone who values leadership, accountability, teamwork, and performance-based upside.
Role Overview

The Lead / Master Technician serves as the technical and cultural leader of the back shop, supporting production quality, mentoring technicians, and helping drive consistent, profitable performance.

This is not a traditional hourly or flat-rate role. Compensation is aligned with results and overall shop success.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and complex repairs
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for the shop
  • Support quality control and repair accuracy
  • Assist with difficult diagnostic cases
Mentorship & Team Development
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level technicians
  • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented back shop culture
  • Encourage consistency, learning, and accountability
  • Help elevate overall shop throughput and capability
Operational Support
  • Assist with determining appropriate labor times for complex jobs
(AllData remains the default labor guide)
  • Provide technical insight to support accurate estimating before pricing is communicated
  • Help ensure efficient workflow and minimize bottlenecks

Note: This role does not manage payroll, set wages, or oversee front-of-house operations.
Compensation Structure (Performance-Based)
Technician Labor Pool
  • Weekly labor pool equal to 20% of customer-billed labor
  • Shared among all production technicians
  • Pool size scales directly with shop performance
Lead / Master Technician Share
  • The Lead / Master Technician receives a primary share of the technician labor pool, reflective of leadership responsibility, experience, and impact
  • In the current staffing model, this equates to approximately 50% of the technician pool, plus a $300 weekly leadership stipend
Dynamic Scaling Provision
  • Technician pool percentages are not fixed entitlements
  • As additional junior or mid-level technicians are added, individual pool percentages may be adjusted to reflect:
    • Team size
    • Skill mix
    • Hours worked
    • Overall contribution
  • Any such adjustments are made to ensure:
    • The relative weighting of the Lead / Master Technician role remains intact
    • The structure remains fair, scalable, and sustainable as the shop grows
Earnings Potential
  • Historical average earnings: ~$2,000+ per week
  • Earnings scale upward with increased billed labor and shop growth
  • No artificial cap on upside
Schedule & Work Expectations
  • Schedule is set by the shop operator to ensure coverage and workflow consistency
  • This role operates on a full-time schedule consistent with leadership responsibilities
  • Some flexibility may be available based on operational needs and performance
  • Occasional early starts or extended days may be required depending on workload

While this position offers more flexibility than an entry-level role, it is not self-scheduled. Reliability, availability, and presence are essential.
Why This Role Is Different
  • No hourly wage
  • No overtime pay
  • No flat-rate competition

Instead, this role offers:
  • Leadership responsibility within the back shop
  • Compensation tied to real results
  • Alignment with team success rather than individual isolation
  • Long-term growth potential as the shop grows
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 8+ years of professional automotive repair experience (preferred)
  • Strong diagnostic capability across multiple systems
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support other technicians
  • Comfortable with performance-based compensation
  • Takes ownership of outcomes, not just tasks
  • Values teamwork, structure, and accountability

ASE certifications preferred but not required.
