This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Environmental Scientist to join our San Antonio, Austin, or Houston, TX office. This role is open to to potential hybrid/remote opportunities.

Provide high level technical assistance and guidance in the disciplines of stormwater permitting and compliance, wastewater permitting and compliance, SPCC compliance, and municipal and industrial waste permitting and compliance. Support industrial facility environmental compliance programs, including auditing, inspections, reporting, and corrective action assistance. Manage multi-media environmental permitting and compliance projects. Ensure that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
  • Provide support for client environmental permitting and compliance programs under federal and state regulations (e.g., NPDES/TPDES, RCRA, SPCC).
  • Prepare industrial and construction stormwater pollution prevention plans and permit applications.
  • Prepare wastewater discharge permit applications (e.g., TPDES, TLAP, POTW).
  • Assist with permitting, reporting, and compliance with industrial and municipal solid waste and recycling programs.
  • Conduct industrial facility environmental compliance audits and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines and lead environmental projects from planning through execution, ensuring timelines, budgets, and deliverables are met.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior colleagues in areas of expertise.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, or closely related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience with a focus on industrial site environmental compliance and permitting.
  • Demonstrated experience with stormwater permitting and compliance (e.g., SWPPP development, inspections, sampling, corrective actions).
  • Experience with wastewater discharge permitting, compliance, and DMR reporting.
  • Strong working knowledge of RCRA hazardous/non-hazardous waste regulations, waste determinations, and compliance programs.
  • Experience preparing SPCC Plans for compliance with 40 CFR Part 112.
  • Experience preparing regulatory reports, permit applications, compliance documentation, and agency correspondence.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, change management, and client communication.
  • Experience conducting environmental compliance audits and assisting with corrective action.
  • Highly effective communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong technical writing skills and proficiency with standard office and data management tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently while providing leadership and QA/QC oversight to project teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, particularly related to compliance strategy and risk mitigation.
  • Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to travel periodically based on project needs and support field activities as required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional certification or licensure such as PG, CPESC, CESSWI, CHMM, REM.
  • Multi-state environmental permitting and consulting experience.
  • Involvement in industry professional association(s).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
