How does the role impact the organization?

The Lead Engineer is the senior technical engineering lead within Digital Workplace & Platform, responsible for improving the stability, resilience, automation, control effectiveness, and operational efficiency of the technology platforms that enable business operations at Raymond James Ltd Canada. The role provides hands-on engineering leadership and design authority without direct people-management responsibility, and works across Canadian and enterprise technology teams to translate standards and strategic direction into secure, reliable, supportable solutions.

The Lead Engineer will apply deep infrastructure and platform engineering expertise, strong communication and analytical skills, and evidence-based decision making across the following capabilities:

What will your role be responsible for?

  • Provide technical leadership, design authority, and engineering guidance to engineers and contractors to ensure operational excellence across Digital Workplace & Platform services.
  • Design, build, and own enterprise automation for server and platform provisioning, patching, configuration, lifecycle management, and recurring operational activities.
  • Engineer automation with monitoring, exception handling, logging, and reporting so failures are detected proactively and control effectiveness can be demonstrated.
  • Develop and maintain automated control-evidence capabilities, including backup compliance reporting, ticket automation, certificate lifecycle reporting, and configuration-data accuracy.
  • Integrate infrastructure workflows with ServiceNow and related enterprise systems to reduce manual fulfilment, improve traceability, and maintain accurate configuration data.
  • Lead the evaluation and engineering of virtualization, storage, datacentre, backup, disaster recovery, and cyber-recovery technologies; provide written recommendations covering architecture, cost, risk, supportability, and migration approach.
  • Lead the engineering required for Azure and hybrid infrastructure adoption, including landing zones, networking, identity integration, policy, tagging, governance, cost controls, and Azure Arc-based hybrid management.
  • Ensure cloud and hybrid foundational architecture, operational controls, and support models are established before production workloads are migrated or adopted.
  • Define and implement observability and service-reliability practices for critical services, including synthetic monitoring for tier-one applications and measurable improvement in alert quality and actionability.
  • Establish and maintain clear ownership for platforms, services, security groups, operational controls, documentation, and support models so accountability is readily identifiable and auditable.
  • Design, build, and govern AI-enabled automations and agents that reduce engineering and operational effort while complying with the firm's AI usage governance and data-sensitivity requirements; measure and report realized benefits.
  • Set and maintain engineering standards for design review, infrastructure-as-code, documentation, runbook quality, operational readiness, and production supportability, and reinforce those standards through technical review.
  • Identify and communicate technology, operational, security, and control risks early, documenting impact and recommending practical remediation paths.
  • Provide senior technical escalation and tier-three engineering support for critical platform issues when required, including participation in appropriate support or on-call arrangements.
  • Undertake other Digital Workplace & Platform accountabilities as assigned.

What do we expect from you?

  • Ten or more years of experience in infrastructure or platform engineering, including at least three years operating at a lead, principal, staff, or equivalent senior technical level.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a production technology platform in a regulated environment, including responsibility for operational controls and supporting control evidence.
  • Hands-on experience delivering infrastructure automation at enterprise scale across provisioning, patching, configuration, and lifecycle management, rather than scripting in isolation.
  • Production Microsoft Azure infrastructure experience, including delivery within at least one hybrid-cloud or migration program.
  • Deep VMware vSphere design and operational experience on a substantial enterprise estate, including platform lifecycle, architecture, or licensing decisions.
  • Experience integrating infrastructure workflows with ServiceNow or an equivalent ITSM platform, including maintaining configuration-management data quality.
  • Strong Windows Server engineering experience, including configuration, hardening, patching, and operation against published enterprise standards.
  • Experience with Azure networking, identity, policy, landing zones, tagging, governance, and cost management; Azure Arc or comparable hybrid-management experience is an asset.
  • Infrastructure-as-code and configuration-management experience using technologies such as Terraform, Bicep, Ansible, or PowerShell DSC.
  • Professional-level PowerShell skills and working proficiency in an additional language such as Python.
  • Enterprise backup and recovery engineering experience, including restore testing and immutable or cyber-recovery patterns.
  • Observability and monitoring design experience, including proactive or synthetic monitoring and the ability to improve alert quality and actionability.
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID, conditional access, privileged access, group governance, and infrastructure identity integration.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers, leading technical reviews, and raising engineering standards across a team.
  • Post-secondary education in information systems, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, certifications, and relevant experience.


Preferred Experience and Certifications

  • Experience leading a hypervisor migration or strategic virtualization evaluation through recommendation and decision; exposure to Nutanix AHV, Azure Local / Azure Stack HCI, or Azure VMware Solution is beneficial.
  • Backup and cyber-recovery engineering experience, ideally with Commvault, including immutability, recovery testing, and clean-room restore concepts.
  • Experience with disaster-recovery tooling migrations, datacentre consolidation or exit, certificate lifecycle management at scale, Power Platform or Copilot Studio governance, and FinOps practices.
  • Experience building or governing AI-enabled agents or automations within enterprise data-sensitivity and AI-governance requirements.
  • Experience working in a Canadian subsidiary or business unit within a larger United States or global enterprise is an asset.
  • One current Microsoft Azure certification at associate level or above, or a current VMware certification such as VCP-DCV, together with evidence of recent continuing technical development. Relevant preferred certifications include Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Identity and Access Administrator Associate, VCAP-DCV, Nutanix Certified Professional, Commvault Certified Professional, and ITIL 4.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a security mindset, with experience implementing security controls, assessing security risks, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Salary Range: $115,000 - 135,000 annually, in addition to competitive performance bonuses/incentives.

Actual compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, internal equity, and other job requirements.
