Full Job Description
Nexamp is seeking a Lead Energy Storage Engineer to serve as a technical subject matter expert supporting the development, engineering, procurement, construction, and operation of utility-scale and distributed energy storage systems across our portfolio. In this role, you will bring deep technical expertise in battery energy storage system design, safety, code compliance, technical due diligence, and vendor evaluation to help ensure our projects are safe, bankable, reliable, and optimized for long-term performance. You will work cross-functionally with Development, Engineering, Construction, Asset Management, Procurement, and external stakeholders to support the successful execution of Nexamp's energy storage strategy.

This is a hybrid role based in either our Boston, MA or Chicago, IL hub offices and reports to the Associate Principal Engineer.

What you'll do:
  • Lead technical evaluations, system design reviews, and engineering due diligence for utility-scale and distributed battery energy storage projects throughout development, procurement, construction, and operational phases.
  • Serve as Nexamp's internal subject matter expert on energy storage safety, fire protection, and code compliance, with deep knowledge and application of NFPA 855 and NEC and familiarity with UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, UL 1741, and UL 1642, while partnering with Development, Permitting, and Engineering on AHJ engagement, permitting strategy, emergency response planning, hazard mitigation analysis, and multi-jurisdiction compliance.
  • Lead the technical assessment of vendor qualification and approved vendor list decisions, including evaluation of cell chemistry, BMS, PCS, thermal management, and integration architecture, and support equipment procurement through product specification reviews, performance guarantee evaluations, factory audits, manufacturing walkthroughs, and monitoring of emerging storage technologies to inform strategic roadmap.
  • Review and validate battery energy storage system architecture, electrical integration, thermal management systems, fire suppression strategies, and safety documentation provided by OEMs, integrators, EPCs, and consultants.
  • Provide technical guidance and risk assessments related to system reliability, degradation, augmentation planning, operational performance, and long-term asset management considerations.
  • Support cross-functional teams through technical presentations, engineering recommendations, root cause analysis, and development of internal engineering standards, best practices, and engineering process documents related to energy storage technologies and deployment.

What you'll bring:
  • 7+ years of related experience, with a minimum of 5 years of direct experience in battery energy storage systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with utility-scale or DG energy storage system design, engineering review, technical due diligence, safety analysis, and code compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
  • Master's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Experience working at an Independent Power Producer (IPP), energy storage OEM/integrator, engineering consulting firm, or EPC organization preferred.
  • Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery technologies, system integration, thermal runaway mitigation, and energy storage operational considerations.
  • Experience supporting Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) engagement, fire marshal coordination, and permitting for energy storage projects preferred.
  • Familiarity with energy market applications including standalone storage, solar + storage, and front-of-the-meter systems preferred.

Compensation

The reasonably estimated salary for this role at Nexamp ranges from $150,000 - $170,000. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual bonus programs based on individual and company performance, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans). Additionally, you may be eligible to participate in the Company's stock option plan. Actual base salary may vary based upon, but is not limited to, skills and qualifications, internal equity, performance, and geographic location.
