Full Job Description
The Lead Design Specialist will be responsible for the design and development of electrical systems, control hardware, and power electronics for digitally enabled and electrically integrated products. This role provides end to end technical ownership across product definition, electrical system architecture, detailed hardware design, verification, certification, and release to production.

The position requires a strong understanding of electrical system requirements, including the integration of electronics within industrial electrical equipment, power distribution, protection, and control systems. The role applies deep expertise in power electronics and control hardware while ensuring solutions meet applicable Canadian and international codes, standards, and system level constraints.

This role works closely with Product Marketing, global development teams, manufacturing, and external partners to deliver both standard and custom solutions aligned with business strategy. Key application areas include Fire Pump Controllers, electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI), energy transition systems, and digitally connected electrical devices. The role also supports third party development and partnership projects through system architecture definition and technical specification development.

What you'll do:
• Define electrical and control system requirements based on customer, regulatory, and product needs.
• Develop electrical system architectures integrating power electronics, control hardware, sensors, protection devices, and communication interfaces.
• Collaborate with Product Marketing to translate market requirements into clear electrical system specifications and execution plans.
• Lead electrical and electronics development activities for Fire Pump Controllers and other power control products.
• Develop, review and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams using ECAD tools, to ensure functional correctness, code compliance, and manufacturability.
• Design and evaluate power and control hardware, including PCBA based solutions, and support sourcing or outsourcing strategies as required.
• Define and execute design verification, qualification, and system level test plans to confirm electrical and functional performance.
• Support manufacturing and industrialization through prototype builds, design transfer, and production readiness activities.
• Act as the subject matter expert (SME) on projects involving power conversion systems, and industrial enclosed controls.
• Prepare and coordinate samples, documentation, and technical support for regulatory and agency compliance testing (CSA, UL).

Qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
• Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in electrical product design.
• Experience designing or supporting power electronics for industrial or control applications.
• Hands on experience troubleshooting electrical and electronic circuits using standard laboratory equipment.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, including power distribution and protection.
• Demonstrated laboratory testing expertise using oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, spectrum analysers, and related test equipment.
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without company sponsorship now and in the future.

Preferred qualifications:
• Master's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
• P.Eng. designation in Canada, or eligibility for registration.
• Understanding of hardware security concepts such as secure boot, device authentication, and digital certificates.
• Familiarity with regulatory and agency approval requirements and design for compliance (CSA, UL).
• Programming experience in C/C++ and scripting languages such as Python.
• Experience with modelling and simulation tools including MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, and LTspice.

Skills:
• Highly motivated technical leader demonstrating strong initiative, curiosity, and ownership of complex engineering problems in a fast-paced engineering environment.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with cross functional teams.
• Strong analytical capability with proven expertise in structured problem solving and technical decision making.
• Design experience in industrial power electronics applications such as soft starters, VFDs, transfer switches, EV chargers, and similar systems.
• Proven expertise in control hardware design, including low power logic circuits, PCB layout, signal integrity, grounding, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
• Experience with component analysis and characterisation of passive and active devices.
• In depth understanding of power electronics design fundamentals, including gate drive design, thermal management, sensing techniques, protection circuitry, EMI reduction, and analogue signal conditioning.
• Working knowledge of embedded firmware for controller based systems, including hardware-firmware integration and debug support.
• Proven capability in defining system architectures, technical specifications, and hardware designs for industrial power conversion systems and electrically integrated products.
• Ability to produce clear, detailed technical specifications derived from marketing, customer, and regulatory requirements.
• Strong attention to detail and disciplined documentation practices supporting design, validation, certification, and product release.
