Responsibilities

  • Operate motorized vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Carry out inspections in accordance with company protocols and standards.
  • Report unsafe conditions promptly and act on observations.
  • Complete additional duties as required.

Journeyperson Powerline Technician

Job Posting: Journeyperson Powerline Technician

Reports To: Director of Electrical Operations

Location: Cobourg, Ontario

Position Summary

This position will be primarily responsible for utilizing safe work practices and procedures in the construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems of 4kV, 27.6kV and 44 kV including 8 substations.

Key Skills and Responsibilities

Construct, maintain and operate the overhead and underground electrical distribution system including but not limited to:
  • Participate in job planning/tailboard conference.
  • Set up work area protection.
  • Perform Safe Work using approved line work techniques such as use of rubber gloves, bare hands, and live line tools.
  • Install, maintain and operate system components such as pole, wires, guying, reclosures, switchgear, transformers, metering, cables, splices, terminations, and components at substations on ground.
  • Utilize and operate motorized vehicles and equipment such as trucks, radial boom derricks, aerial devices, portable generators, power saws, and drills in a safe manner.
  • Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain an excellent safety and attendance record.
  • Complete inspections of newly installed or modified distribution plant in accordance with Lakefront's Construction Verification Program, including completing the Record of Inspection and Inspection Certificates.
  • Perform tree trimming as required.
  • Responsible for a working knowledge and understanding of appropriate safety legislation, company policies and procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices.
  • Complete other job duties as necessary.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies
  • Successful completion of Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or recognized equivalent.
  • Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate or completion of 3 years as an apprentice.
  • Physically fit for the responsibilities and ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate all equipment associated with the trade.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of line-work practices, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from electronic work orders, specifications, standards, and instructions, able to interpret prints, sketches and diagrams.
  • Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate laptop computers, mobile devices and computer-based tools and technology.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with coworkers and members of the public to achieve positive outcomes for the company.
  • Possess good knowledge of industry regulations, the Electrical Utility Safety Rules, the Utility Work Protection Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and related Construction and Industrial Regulations.
  • Requires current Standard First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS training.
  • Requires a valid Ontario Driver's License with "DZ" designation and an excellent driving record.
  • Strong understanding of ESA rules and regulations as applicable to the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution systems.
  • Must reside within 45 minutes of Cobourg or be able to relocate within 6 months to accommodate an ideal response time.

Wage

The current wage for this position is $47.34 per hour, in accordance with LUSI's Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 25. LUSI offers a rewarding working environment, benefits package, pension plan and opportunities for development.
