Job Title
Laboratory Materials Analyst I

Prepare samples and conduct routine quantitative and qualitative analysis to characterize ceramic and other inorganic materials, interpret results and create reports for internal customers.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Analyze ceramic and other inorganic materials to determine customer requested properties in a single area of expertise such as:
    XRD and XRF
    SEM and LOM
    Light Element Analysis and BET Surface Area Analysis
    Chemical Analysis, including ICP (MS and OES)
    Physical Analysis, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, and wear
  • Work under lab section leader's supervision.
  • Prepare samples, collect data, and report findings per appropriate techniques and standards.
  • Prepare accurate and timely technical reports for use by engineering, research and development, and production.
  • Use standard statistical methods and tools as directed in pre-existing operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with technicians working in area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for cleaning and preventative maintenance of equipment within area of responsibility and troubleshoot common operating issues.
  • Report instrument and measurement technique issues to appropriate lab leadership.
  • Utilize preexisting standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, and tests.
  • Promote a safety culture and participate in continuous improvement efforts. Identify potential and current safety issues and provide improvement recommendations.


Job Requirements:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Physics, or related field.


Experience:
  • Minimum experience required: college level laboratory coursework with at least one related internship.
  • Preferred experience: at least 2 years of laboratory experience, either at the graduate level or within industry. Experience related to area of responsibility most preferred.


Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Accurately use custom computer system, department-specific software, and manufacturer-specific analytical testing software, in performance of job duties.
  • Strong technical communication skills.
  • Capability to perform basic statistical analyses.
  • Exhibit the communication skills necessary to effectively work within a team environment and to communicate with customers.
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, and self-driven.


Position Specific Physical Requirements:
  • Required to always wear appropriate personal protective equipment in work areas.
  • May be required to handle hazardous chemicals such as acids, bases, and solvents.
  • May be required to wear a respirator (a medical evaluation will be required prior to fitting).
  • May prepare samples at high temperature using furnaces.

Target Hiring Range
Annual Salary: USD 73,342.00 - USD 96,811.00

Actual compensation is commensurate with experience, skills and education.
