Job Description

The Laboratory Manager plans and implements the overall laboratory policies, procedures, and services for the assigned laboratory under the Mount Sinai Health System. This individual ensures efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence.

Responsibilities

  • Trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of laboratory staff; develop work performance standards; schedule and assign work and develop priorities; provide technical expertise as needed or requested
  • Establishes and revises laboratory policies and procedures; develops and maintains appropriate control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with current safety requirements such as College of American Pathologist (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and with Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and state accreditation organizations.
  • Hires, trains, evaluate and perform disciplinary actions with personnel in the laboratory when necessary.
  • Establishes work schedules and assignments for staff, according to workload, space and equipment availability.
  • Maintains awareness of advances in laboratory procedures, computerized diagnostic and treatment equipment, data processing technology
  • Participates in long-range planning and budgeting processes; project personnel and equipment needs; develops and monitors the laboratory budget; approves purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of advances in laboratory technology; computer applications, federal and state regulations; attend seminars, lectures, meetings and professional conferences.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
  • Interacts with other departments and corporate affiliates to resolve problems, introduce new services, and provide consultative services.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, biology or a closely related field. Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum five years experience as laboratory with two years supervisory experience involving supervision of professional laboratory personnel.
