POSITION SUMMARY: Coordinates/provides nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with nursing, ancillary, and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
Because the primary patients for whom the OB Department provides care are females of child-bearing age and newborn infants, the OB charge nurse must be competent in the assessment of teenage and adult mothers for appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological and psychological norms. He or she must be knowledgeable in issues of antepartum/postpartum and newborn medication and safety, and cognizant of social issues frequently seen in dealing with new parents, and competently provide care as needed by patient and family groups.
In addition, the OB charge nurse must be competent in the assessment of newborn infants and able to evaluate newborn infants for appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological norms. The OB charge nurse must also be able to administer newborn medication doses as calculated by weight and size and competently provide patient care as required by the newborn.
Labor and delivery personnel has the knowledge base, clinical skills, organizational skills and personal initiative to manage and care for antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum patients resulting in positive outcomes for patient. Includes patient support system in plan of care and addresses psychosocial circumstances.
Charge Nurse will assist in making unit schedule including PTO requests. Assists in adjusting unit schedule on a routine basis to balance staffing needs, staff requests and call offs. Demonstrates ability to assist staff to make daily assignments which ensure appropriate staffing levels. Participates in department performance improvement projects and audits with demonstrated ability to extract data, compile and report data, and suggest appropriate course of corrections based on findings.
REQUIREMENTS:Education: Graduate from a school of nursing with either diploma associate degree or B.S.N.
Licensure/Certification: CA RN License, Current BLS, ACLS, NRP & NIHSS/Stroke Scale certifications required upon hire.
Experience: - At least three-year prior experience in an Obstetrical Unit. Previous Charge experience is highly preferred.
- Basic Computer Skills.
- Maintains Fetal Monitor Certification- Labor RN (intermediate or advanced) Mother Baby RN (Basic Fetal monitoring) (AWHONN/ACOG endorsed, includes NICHD nomenclature).
