The Lab Engineer will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to design, integrate, and test innovative space-based and terrestrial systems and subsystems. The Lab Engineer will work closely with colleagues throughout ALG inter-disciplinary teams and collaborate with key partners and suppliers to ensure our system exceeds customer expectations. The Lab Engineer must be responsive, flexible, innovative, and able to succeed within a collaborative, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.
As a member of the ALG Engineering Integrated Systems Solutions organization, the Lab Engineer will be responsible for the quality, reliability, cost, manufacturability, throughput, and security of ALG product deliverables. The Lab Engineer accomplishes this by effectively managing research & development (R&D) engineering labs, identifying process improvements to improve build and test efficiency, and working closely with multiple engineering teams on early hardware & software development efforts setting the stage for low-rate production manufacturing and factory acceptance test processes. The candidate will have the capability to build and assemble production hardware, develop mechanical tooling, integrate and validate electronic test systems, develop manufacturing and test procedures, and modify automation test software for various products including but not limited to opto-electrical subsystems, opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical subsystems, and RF systems. This candidate will also be responsible for the maintenance and operation of environmental test systems including but not limited to thermal vacuum/thermal cycle test chambers, dynamics/vibration test systems, and accelerate life test systems. The successful applicant will be involved with many aspects of the installation, testing, and maintenance of satellite ground station antennas in outdoor, datacenter, and lab settings. This will involve mechanical, electrical, RF, optical and copper cable and harness/metal fabrication, equipment logistics.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working on large-scale programs with a diverse set of talented individuals, as well as with partner organizations (including government agencies).
The position could involve some travel to visit test facility to support external test campaign.
Key job responsibilities
* **Assembly & Integration:** Build, document, and integrate complex opto-mechanical, opto-electrical, and electro-mechanical satellite assemblies, subsystems, and final space vehicles.
* **Lab Management & Operations:** Oversee R&D lab spaces, inventory, consumables, asset tracking, and facilities. Drive strict safety protocols for cleanrooms, ESD-sensitive hardware, and FOD control.
* **Equipment & Infrastructure:** Manage requirements, preventative maintenance, calibrations, and upgrades for test equipment, tooling, DAQ systems, and environmental chambers.
* **Logistics & Material Handling:** Coordinate receiving and delivery logistics, including heavy rigging, forklifts, and gantry/bridge crane operations.
* **Ground Systems & Antennas:** Configure, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain satellite ground station antennas, gateway communication systems, and ground hardware.
* **Process Improvement & Planning:** Identify and document critical process mechanisms to improve lab safety, manufacturing efficiency, and build quality.
* **Project & Vendor Management:** Conduct project planning, cost analysis, and vendor evaluations. Coordinate subcontractor scheduling, facility infrastructure projects, and maintain rigorous documentation for job status and material flow.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of hardware design and validation of components, subsystems and systems experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience with hardware/software integration and real-time systems
