Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

We are looking for a Compliance Safety and Health Investigator 5 (CISHI 5) - Safety to join our Region 6 Safety team in Spokane. This is a frontline leadership opportunity for someone who brings strong safety expertise, understands regulatory compliance, and is ready to make a difference for workers across Washington.

For this position, 1 day per week in office is required otherwise, teleworking is permitted with some occasional field work. The assigned duty station is Spokane, WA.

Duties
What You'll Do

• Lead and support a team of safety professionals conducting inspections and investigations ranging from routine to highly complex.
• Take charge when the stakes are high, including fatalities, catastrophes, complaints, referrals, and other significant investigations.
• Review inspection and investigation work to ensure it is accurate, thorough, consistent, and aligned with WISHA requirements.
• Use your safety expertise to help inspectors identify hazards, evaluate risk, develop sound findings, and determine appropriate corrective action.
• Review citations, proposed penalties, technical reports, employer written programs, and other compliance documentation.
• Coach, mentor, train, and hold staff accountable for quality work and performance.
• Conduct safety compliance inspections and participate in complex, multi-employer, and coordinated inspections.
• Work collaboratively with Industrial Hygiene, Consultation, Policy and Technical Services, the Attorney General's Office, and other DOSH teams.
• Build professional relationships with employers, employees, attorneys, unions, industry groups, and other stakeholders, even when the conversations are difficult.
• Help ensure consistent and uniform application of safety and health laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in informal conferences, appeal hearings, and other proceedings involving complex compliance matters.
• Help develop and implement regional and statewide projects focused on preventing workplace injuries and addressing high-hazard workplaces.

Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate.
Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain. Must also be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear.

Qualifications
REQUIRED:

• A current L&I employee;
• One year of supervisory or leadership experience;
• A valid and unrestricted driver's license;
• Ability to take action to learn and grow; and
• Ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

AND

• Six years of experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety and Health Investigator, including one year at the CISHI 3 or 4 level, or equivalent journey-level safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist experience with Federal OSHA or another state plan;
  OR
• Seven years of full-time experience as an employer's safety director or manager, industrial hygienist, or safety and health specialist;

DESIRED:

• Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
• Demonstrated leadership in accident investigations, inspections, and regulatory enforcement
• Strong communication and conflict resolution skills when working with employers, unions, and legal teams
• Bilingual preferred; persons of all languages are encouraged to apply. Bilingual jobs include a 5% salary increase for dual language responsibilities.
