Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10%for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

AND IF BILINGUAL

If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position will be provided by L&I DOSH as specified in WAC 296-800-16020.

This is not a medical, clinical, or patient care role. It is a technical position focused on industrial hygiene, including workplace exposure assessment, sampling, and hazard control.

This in-training opportunity provides a structured path to the journey-level investigator role, including classroom instruction, field experience, and mentorship from experienced industrial hygienists and safety professionals.

This position can be offered with a flexible schedule (4/10's, 9/80's, 5/8's etc.) once fully trained and approved by management.
Teleworking is permitted on occasion dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station can be in any one of our Region 5 locations: E. Wenatchee, Moses Lake, Union Gap, or Kennewick.

Duties
Some of what you will do:

• Lead on-site consultations with employers that identify and solve complex occupational health challenges.
• Sample and analyze air quality, noise levels, chemical, and other exposure risks using cutting-edge industrial hygiene methods.
• Perform complex safety and health surveys and audits to identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for occupational health hazards, including chemical, biological, and physical hazards.
• Craft practical, science-based solutions that employers can act on.
• Mentor and guide other professionals sharing your expertise to strengthen the DOSH team.
• Partner with employers and employees alike to create safer, smarter workplaces.

Driving is required as part of this job. When a position has a driving requirement, the incumbent must drive in order to perform the duties of their position. In fact, driving is a duty mentioned in their position description, such as an L&I consultant who drives throughout the workday to get from one location to another. Therefore, they must use a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV) in order to perform the duties and responsibilities of their position. Use of a POV will be reimbursed with the current mileage reimbursement rate.
Must be physically capable of walking through a variety of workplaces such as large manufacturing plants with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and walking through rough terrain. Must also be able to be exposed to weather (wearing appropriate weather gear) for long durations.

Qualifications
REQUIRED:

• A valid and unrestricted driver's license

And one of the following:

To qualify as a OSHPRO2-Industrial Hygiene (In-training):

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university involving major study in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field AND Two years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience OR one year as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 1 in DOSH.

OR

• A Master's degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene or similar field AND one year of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience.

OR

• Six years of technician, paraprofessional or higher, paid occupational/industrial safety related experience in government, military, or public health work environment.

To qualify as an OSHPRO3-Industrial Hygiene (Goal class):

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in industrial hygiene, or related field AND four years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience

OR

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in industrial hygiene, or related field AND two years as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 2 in DOSH.

OR

• Master's Degree from an accredited university in industrial hygiene, or similar field AND two years of professional experience.

OR

• Four years of full-time journey level paid industrial hygiene experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, public health, or related industrial hygiene field.

DESIRED:

• Spanish bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Bilingual positions include a 5% salary increase for dual language responsibilities.
• Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
• Skilled in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, biological, and physical occupational health hazards
• Possession of a thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA (federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules and regulations
• Strong communication and conflict resolution skills when working with employers, unions, and legal teams
• Experience conducting training and delivering presentations to large groups
• Experience leading complex consultations or inspections
