Junior Underwriter is a developmental role designed for an insurance professional ready to build a career in underwriting. The position supports Retail Excess Casualty business while gaining hands-on experience in risk evaluation, pricing, renewals, new business, and broker relationship management.
Essential Functions:
- Supports the underwriting and servicing of Retail Excess Casualty business, initially working under the guidance of experienced underwriters and within assigned underwriting authority.
- Reviews new and renewal submissions to evaluate risk acceptability, identify missing information, and determine alignment with company appetite, guidelines, and underwriting standards.
- Assists with underwriting analysis and due diligence, including the review of loss information, exposure details, financial information, policy terms, conditions, and other relevant risk factors.
- Develops proficiency in rating and pricing accounts and applies appropriate pricing methodologies in accordance with company guidelines, filings, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Prepares underwriting files, quotes, and account documentation accurately and in accordance with internal and regulatory standards.
- Reviews policy forms, terms, conditions, and endorsement requests with guidance from experienced underwriters.
- Supports an assigned book of renewal business and progressively assumes responsibility for renewals and new business based on experience, demonstrated capability, and assigned authority.
- Builds relationships with retail brokers and participates in broker and client meetings to support account retention, new business development, and the team’s continued growth.
- Partners with internal teams, including Claims, Risk Engineering, and Marketing, as appropriate, to evaluate risks and support broker and client needs.
- Continues developing technical underwriting knowledge, market awareness, and broker relationship skills through hands-on training, coaching, and shadowing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 1+ year (2+ year's preferred) insurance experience within underwriting support, insurance operations, or related industry experience.
- Demonstrated interest in building a career in underwriting, with strong learning agility and motivation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work from the New York City office four days per week.

Salary: The base pay range is $90,000.00 - 105,000.00 . Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
