What's the Role and What You'll Do
Imagine you begin the morning outside a neighborhood school, joining parents and students on a walking or biking audit to learn where they encounter safety challenges. Back at City Hall, you review collision data and work with the City's traffic engineers to identify improvements that could make the route safer. Later, you review a draft report evaluating the results of transportation demand management efforts implemented in a major employment area. Before the day ends, you may help review a development proposal, identify opportunities to include green infrastructure in a separated bikeway project, or draft a grant for a project that makes it easier for someone to walk, bike, take transit, or move through Mountain View safely.

This is transportation planning in Mountain View-where data, policy, technical analysis, and community engagement come together to turn complex transportation challenges into practical projects, programs, and recommendations.

Transportation accounts for up to 60% of Mountain View's greenhouse gas emissions, making the way people travel an important part of the City's future. Through initiatives such as Vision Zero, the Active Transportation Plan, Transportation Demand Management Ordinance, North Bayshore Trip Cap Monitoring, Safe Routes to School, and the Mountain View Community Shuttle, the Transportation Planning Section is working to create a safer, more connected, and more sustainable transportation system.

You will join a team of transportation planners with expertise in a broad range of subjects, from active transportation to transportation demand management, transportation funding and policy, transit operations, and engineering. Together, the team delivers transportation initiatives that support the City's vision for mobility, connectivity, and sustainability.

Tasks include assisting with field work, attending community engagement events, assisting with technical and complex reports, and working on various current and long-range planning projects and programs, including our Safe Routes to School program, Active Transportation Plan implementation, and Community Shuttle study.
