Full Job Description
About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Software Systems Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and developing applications that contain complex logical and mathematical solutions. You will work at the intersection of hardware and software, utilizing scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict outcomes and ensure our systems meet the highest performance standards. As a mid-level professional, you will have the autonomy to determine your approach to solving difficult technical challenges that directly impact government product and commercial software utilization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in the design, development, testing, and utilization of electronic data processing software.
  • Design and develop applications software and systems that integrate complex logical and mathematical solutions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including hardware engineers and equipment designers, to plan and utilize data processing systems.
  • Analyze user needs and system capabilities to resolve technical problems related to program intent, output requirements, and input data acquisition.
  • Design and develop low-level system components, including compilers, assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems.
  • Prepare detailed operating instructions and ensure all software standards are strictly met.
  • Analyze software requirements to determine the feasibility of design within established time and cost constraints.
  • Consult with systems analysts, engineers, and programmers to obtain information on project limitations, performance requirements, and interfaces.
  • Apply scientific analysis and mathematical models to modify software systems and predict design consequences.
  • Coordinate software system installations and monitor equipment functioning to ensure specifications and performance standards are met.
  • Independently determine and develop approaches to technical solutions for a wide range of difficult problems.

Required Experience/Clearance

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with FS Polygraph.
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with 5+ years of experience OR a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of technical principles, theories, and concepts in software engineering.
  • Proven experience in the design, development, and debugging of applications software.
  • Experience with systems-level programming (e.g., compilers, assemblers, or operating systems).
  • Strong background in using mathematical models and scientific analysis for software design.

Desired Experience

We encourage all candidates who meet the basic requirements to apply, even if you do not have any of the following experience:
  • Experience using GitLab for version control and Jira for project management.
  • Familiarity with containerization and cloud-based data processing environments.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C, C++, or Python in a scientific or systems context.
  • Prior experience supporting government or Department of Defense (DoD) software projects.
