Full Job Description
Job Title: Junior Process Engineer

Department: Engineering

Reporting to: Technical Operations Manager

Location: Sarnia Research Park, Sarnia, Ontario (on-site)

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Vacancy Status: This position is vacant.

Canadian Biojet Fuel Laboratories (CBFL), a division of Greenfield Global is looking for a Junior Process Engineer to join our growing team.

Position Overview

The Junior Process Engineer will support Canadian Biojet Fuel Laboratories' (CBFL) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) pilot operations and process development program in Sarnia, Ontario. This full-time, permanent role combines process engineering, pilot plant operations, and the need to secure the necessary experimental development learnings in an efficient and safe manner to advance CBFL's Mixed-Alcohol-To-Jet (MATJ) and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) pathways toward ASTM-compatible fully synthetic aviation fuel. The engineer will lead teams of pilot plant operators to execute test campaigns, maintain process models and engineering documentation ensuring that operating data (including analytical) is accurate in order to drive all the necessary development learnings to support scale-up from pilot to demonstration and then to commercial facilities. Occasional travel to partner facilities (e.g., University of Alberta) may be required for commissioning support and technical alignment.

Work Environment & Schedule

This role is primarily on-site at CBFL's Sarnia Research Park pilot facility. The pilot plant operates on a continuous basis, and the successful candidate will participate in an on-call rotation, weekend work and occasional off-shift support as required. Occasional travel to partner facilities may be required.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering working towards Professional Engineer designation.
  • Proficiency with process simulation tools (Aspen Plus/HYSYS or equivalent) and strong competency in mass/energy balances.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze process data (e.g., Python, Excel, PI historian tools) and translate results into operational improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical reports and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Your Experience Should Include

  • 2+ years of process engineering and/or pilot plant operations experience in fuels, petrochemicals, refining, catalysis, or related process industries.
  • Experience with catalytic hydrocarbon processing, reactor operations, and process troubleshooting especially in the field of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is highly preferred.
  • Experience with the four tier levels in the ASTM SAF development/ testing / approval system is an asset.
  • Strong safety mindset and experience working within Process Safety Management frameworks (HAZOP/MOC).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all company health and safety, and environmental policies and regulatory requirements
  • Provide process engineering leadership for pilot plant operations, optimization, and continuous improvement of CBFL's MATJ multi-stage pilot systems (and related SAF development assets).
  • Responsible for developing experimental campaigns, arranging for resources, monitoring the trials as they are ongoing, and documenting the results of the campaign including: catalyst performance, conversion efficiency, product distribution, and fuel property outcomes.
  • Apply statistical methods and data validation practices to ensure results are reliable, reproducible, and suitable for engineering decisions and external reporting.
  • Develop and maintain process simulation models (e.g., Aspen Plus/HYSYS) and support calculation tools to guide trial planning, operational changes, and scale-up decisions.
  • Perform mass and energy balances; develop and maintain process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation packages.
  • Participate in commissioning activities including equipment start-up, catalyst changeovers, operational readiness reviews, and performance verification.
  • Provide field engineering coverage and technical support during off-shift events to maintain safe, stable operations in coordination with operators and supervision.
  • Troubleshoot process upsets and implement corrective actions using data analytics, root-cause analysis, and structured problem-solving methods pertaining to the trials and experimental campaigns.
  • Support safety management systems including hazard identification (HAZID), HAZOP participation, Management of Change (MOC), and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders (engineering partners, catalyst suppliers, testing laboratories, and academic collaborators) to execute technical deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain technical records, data packages, and engineering reports required for project tracking, grant compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Support planning and execution of sampling and analytical testing, including interpretation of ASTM and fuel quality test results.
  • Contribute to commercialization readiness by identifying scale-up risks, defining equipment needs, supporting demonstration-plant design inputs, and documenting learnings.

Total Compensation & Care:
  • Base salary dependent on experience and demonstrated performance - $85,000 - $100,000
  • Formal and informal training opportunities
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits
