Job Description:

Summary

The Counsel position provides legal support for dispute resolution and litigation matters across Ryder. This role is responsible for managing a portfolio of claims, disputes, and litigation matters, partnering with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to mitigate legal risk, control costs, and achieve favorable business outcomes. The position supports all phases of litigation, including early case assessment, discovery, document review, strategic analysis, settlement evaluation, and case management. The attorney collaborates closely with operations, claims, and business leaders to align legal strategies with organizational objectives and ensure compliance with legal obligations.


Essential Functions

  • Manage litigation and dispute matters, including responding to discovery requests and subpoenas, conducting document review, identifying key evidence and potential risk exposure, and partnering with outside counsel to drive efficient case resolution and reduce legal spend.

  • Oversee a portfolio of pending claims, disputes, and litigation matters by monitoring case progress, managing deadlines and budgets, and collaborating with operations, claims, and business stakeholders to align legal strategy with business objectives.

  • Represent Ryder in mediations and settlement discussions, advocating the company's interests and supporting the resolution of disputes in a manner that mitigates legal and financial risk.

  • Attend local hearings and other court proceedings as required, serving as Ryder's legal representative in jurisdictions where attorney representation is required for corporate entities.

  • Support dispute resolution efforts through early case assessment, evaluation of settlement opportunities, and development of recommendations to mitigate legal and financial risk.

  • Assist in developing and implementing litigation strategies that minimize risk, improve outcomes, and control external legal costs.

  • Analyze claims, defenses, contractual obligations, regulatory requirements, and potential liability exposures to provide legal guidance and inform litigation strategy.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong experience with discovery, motion practice, and case management, required.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple matters and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, required.

  • Strong business judgment and ability to provide practical solutions, required.

  • Experience integrating legal AI tools for document review, drafting, legal research, and workflow efficiency, preferred.

  • Experience analyzing liability and exposure in high-risk scenarios, including catastrophic injury matters, multi-party claims, and indemnity-driven disputes, preferred.

  • Background in truck rental, transportation, logistics, or other highly regulated industries is a plus, preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in legal, required.

  • J.D. from accredited school, required.

  • One (1) year or more litigation experience (law firm experience preferred), required.

  • Upon hire - active bar membership in good standing, required.
