Full Job Description
Job Description:

Skilled Wound Care is seeking a motivated Jr. DevOps Engineer to support the deployment, operation, and security of our healthcare software platforms - including our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and our end-to-end Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) and billing platform. In this role, you will work closely with, and under the guidance of, our Lead Software Developers and senior DevOps staff, helping to build, ship, run, monitor, and secure our applications in production. This is a great opportunity to grow your DevOps career within a healthcare technology environment, taking on increasing ownership of our application infrastructure as your skills develop. This position is focused exclusively on our software product infrastructure - the servers, cloud resources, containers, pipelines, and tooling that support our applications. You will not be responsible for general corporate IT systems such as file shares, remote desktop servers, internal VPNs, or end-user device management. Because our platforms handle Protected Health Information (PHI), security and compliance are core to the role, and you'll receive hands-on mentorship to build your skills in this area.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management of our application servers and cloud infrastructure across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Help provision and manage AWS resources (EC2, VPC, RDS, S3, IAM, Route 53, ELB/ALB, CloudFront, ACM, etc.) to support our application stack, under the guidance of senior engineers; secondary GCP exposure is a plus.
  • Support the maintenance and hardening of Docker images and container deployments for our applications.
  • Assist in using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) to define and version-control cloud resources, building IaC skills over time.
  • Help maintain Linux servers - installing, patching, and tuning them for performance, reliability, and security.
  • Coordinate with the development team on updates to application runtimes, frameworks, and system-level dependencies (e.g., PHP, Node.js, Python, Nginx/Apache, MySQL, OS packages).
  • Support the build and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or CircleCI) for automated build, test, and deployment of our applications.
  • Help implement safe, repeatable release processes including environment promotion, automated test gates, and reliable rollback procedures.
  • Contribute to tooling and documentation that helps developers ship faster while staying within secure, compliant guardrails.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining monitoring, alerting, and observability tooling (e.g., CloudWatch, Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus/Grafana) across our application stack.
  • Support centralized logging and audit trail practices appropriate for a HIPAA-regulated environment.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for production incidents, with senior DevOps staff and Lead Software Developers providing primary coverage and support.
  • Help investigate and resolve production issues, communicate clearly with stakeholders during incidents, and contribute to post-mortems with concrete follow-up actions.
  • Help track uptime and reliability targets, and flag reliability or capacity risks as they're identified.
  • Support the security posture of our application infrastructure: AWS security groups and network ACLs, IAM/role-based access, encryption in transit and at rest, secrets management (e.g., AWS Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, or HashiCorp Vault), and audit logging.
  • Assist with implementing controls aligned with HIPAA Security Rule requirements, including access controls, audit trails, integrity controls, transmission security, and backup/disaster recovery.
  • Support vulnerability scanning and dependency/container image scanning, and help coordinate timely remediation of security findings with the development team.
  • Help maintain configurations and documentation needed to support audits and compliance frameworks (e.g., HIPAA, and SOC 2 / HITRUST as we mature).
  • Assist with managing backups, retention policies, encryption keys, and disaster recovery procedures- including periodic restore testing.

Requirements:
  • Must be willing to work fully onsite, 5 days/week, at our Playa Vista, CA office. Hours are shift-based according to business need (schedule may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends as required).
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the US without restriction.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field is required.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in a DevOps, SRE, Cloud Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical role.
  • Some exposure to the application deployment lifecycle - build, release, monitoring, and incident response- through professional experience, internships, or coursework.
  • Eager to learn and grow into greater ownership of application infrastructure while working closely with senior DevOps staff and Lead Software Developers.
  • Working knowledge of Linux administration - comfortable on the command line, with basic familiarity with services like systemd, networking, file systems, package management, and shell scripting.
  • Foundational hands-on experience with AWS core services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, and RDS; familiarity with Route 53, ELB/ALB, or GCP is a plus.
  • Experience with Docker fundamentals - building images and running containers.
  • Exposure to CI/CD tools and concepts such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or CircleCI.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code concepts, ideally Terraform; willingness to build deeper IaC skills on the job.
  • Proficiency with at least one scripting/automation language (Bash, Python, or similar).
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals: DNS, TLS/SSL, HTTP(S), load balancing, reverse proxies, and firewall/security group concepts.
  • Basic familiarity with relational databases (MySQL preferred; PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or MS SQL Server also acceptable).
  • Exposure to monitoring/alerting or centralized logging tools is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and apply HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule requirements as they relate to application infrastructure (training provided).
  • Basic awareness of secure-by-default infrastructure practices: least-privilege IAM, secrets management, and encryption in transit and at rest.
  • General awareness of common web application and infrastructure security risks (e.g., OWASP Top 10 at a conceptual level).
  • Comfort working in an Agile environment using JIRA (or equivalent) for ticket tracking and project visibility.
  • Comfort with Git-based workflows (branching, pull requests, code review).
  • Ability to write clear notes and documentation; will build runbook and post-mortem skills on the job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior exposure to healthcare software platforms (EHR/EMR, RCM, medical billing, practice management, or similar) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, X12 EDI, clearinghouse connectivity) is a plus.
  • Exposure to compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, HITRUST, or SOC 2.
  • Experience with HashiCorp tooling (Vault, Consul) or equivalent secrets-management solutions.
  • Exposure to configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or SaltStack).
  • Exposure to PHP application stacks (PHP-FPM, OPcache, Composer, etc.) and/or Node.js and Python application servers.
  • AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect- Associate.
  • Security-focused certifications such as CompTIA Security+.
  • Experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) responsibly to accelerate scripting, IaC authoring, troubleshooting, and documentation- we view AI as a force multiplier, not a replacement for sound engineering judgment..

Details:
  • Pay: $38-$45 per hour, depending on experience.
  • This is a full-time, fully onsite position based at our Playa Vista, CA office, 5 days/week, with shift- based hours according to business need.
  • Health, Dental, Vision Insurance
  • Generous 401k plan
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Life Insurance
  • Education stipend
