We are currently seeking an Intermediate / Senior Building Mechanical Engineer to join our Buildings Engineering team in Waterloo/Greater Toronto Area, Ontario. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work on a diverse range of new construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects while developing technical expertise and growing your career within a globally connected engineering practice.

As an Intermediate / Senior Building Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the design and delivery of building mechanical systems, working alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. You will be involved in all phases of project delivery, from planning and design through construction support and commissioning.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
  • Assist in the design and analysis of HVAC, plumbing, piping, drainage, fire protection, and building automation systems for new and existing facilities.
  • Perform engineering calculations, equipment selections, load calculations, and system evaluations.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering studies, condition assessments, and design documentation.
  • Develop and coordinate mechanical system layouts using Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP.
  • Convert engineering markups and design concepts into working drawings and models.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical specifications and contract documents.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
Project Delivery & Coordination
  • Support the delivery of multiple projects while meeting quality, budget, and schedule requirements.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural, electrical, and specialty consultants.
  • Assist with project planning, documentation control, and design coordination activities.
Construction Administration
  • Review shop drawings, equipment submittals, and contractor Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Assist with contract administration documentation, including change notices, change orders, and payment certifications.
  • Conduct site surveys, field investigations, and construction review visits.
  • Support general review activities to verify compliance with design intent and contract documents.
Client Support & Business Development
  • Participate in client meetings and project discussions.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, technical submissions, and fee estimates.
  • Contribute to developing positive relationships with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
Professional Development
  • Work closely with senior engineers and project managers to develop technical and project management skills.
  • Participate in mentorship, training, and professional development initiatives.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, sustainability practices, and relevant codes and standards.
What you'll bring to the Team:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Eligible to obtain Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
  • 8-10 years of experience in the design of HVAC Systems, Plumbing, piping and Drainage Systems, Fire Protection Systems, Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including but not limited to: Ontario Building Code (OBC), ASHRAE Standards, NFPA Standards, CSA Standards, National Plumbing Code
  • Proficiency in Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, HAP
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) and/or Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) certification.
  • Experience with sustainable building design, energy modelling, decarbonization, or high-performance buildings.

The salary range for this position is $$87,570 - $133,570. The posted salary range represents the expected hiring range for GHD locations in its major city centres. Ranges may vary for positions in other locations. At GHD, base salary is determined by your skills, experience, qualifications and work location.
