Hiring salary range: $3,610.06 - $4,847.80 / Bi-weekly

Job Function:

Prepare engineering design and other related work of average complexity and assist Senior Development Design Engineer in design work of major complexity concerning transmission lines 115 kv and above, overhead and underground and associated equipment.

Job Description:

  • Perform engineering work of average complexity such as preparation of estimate specifications, providing technical advice and assistance during expansion of the system plan, preparation of detailed designs, providing technical parts of specifications and participate in the analysis of tenders in relation to transmission lines, underground and overhead, and associated equipment 115 kV and above: Receive general requirements from Supervisor or others, together with basic design assumptions. Prepare sound and economic designs, including detailed calculations. Prepare complete sketches of work designed. Discuss design features with Supervisor and submit for check upon completion.
  • Collaborate with others in the division in the preparation of recommendations for the effective operation and maintenance of new and revised facilities, with information on the potentialities and limitations inherent in the design.
  • Participate as required, in studies of designs, specifications and construction methods to ensure compatibility for optimum economy: Discuss requirements with Supervisor. Evaluate present methods and recommend improvements. Visit construction sites to gain first-hand knowledge. Work with person concerned in solution of problem area. Keep Supervisor informed of progress.
  • Assist senior development design engineer as assigned, in design work of major complexity: Receive basic design assumptions along with necessary instructions. Proceed with the design as outlined. Obtain direction on unfamiliar areas from party concerned. Submit completed work for review.
  • Prepare and arrange for the processing of computer programs to per form design calculations: Receive assignments from Supervisor along with reference points to the data required. Assemble information, study all available literature and consult with other utilities and manufacturers as arranged by Supervisor, to obtain data on similar programs, if any. Arrange engineering formula or calculations into a coding language, suitable for transfer to data processing centres, internal or external through formal training in coding language and association with processing personnel. Modify existing programs where feasible to meet requirements. Cooperate with data processing personnel in debugging program. Edit the input and output for routine operation of program.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Education:

  • Requires civil engineering knowledge as it applies to structural design in order to assist in the design of new structures and in the calculation of conductor sags and tensions.
  • Requires a knowledge of electrical transmission theory for the design of conductor configurations, insulations, clearances and the like.
  • Requires a knowledge of soil mechanics in order to design foundations.
  • Requires a general knowledge of computer operation and a detailed knowledge of coding language for the preparation of computer programs.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired in and equivalent to a 4-year university education in an appropriate field such as civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering.


Experience:

  • Requires field construction experience to learn the limitations of equipment and the methods used to meet special field problems.
  • Requires on-the-job experience to become familiar with the structural design work within the department, particularly as it pertains to design and layout of transmission line structures and foundations, the function, organizational setup, the responsibilities of the department and the standard practice and procedures pertaining thereto, the mathematical calculations of sags and tensions, vibration problems, clearances and to gain experience in the other associated duties.
  • A period of up to 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
