What You Would Do in This Role

We are seeking an Intermediate Piping Engineer to support the design and execution of piping systems on EPC projects and MOC programs within oil sands, SAGD, and energy facilities. This role focuses on technical execution, interdisciplinary coordination, and engineering support from concept through detailed design and construction.
The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Senior and Lead Piping Engineers to deliver safe, code-compliant, and constructible piping designs that meet project quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Support piping engineering activities on projects from concept through detailed engineering and construction support
  • Develop, review, and update piping deliverables under senior supervision including:
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Line Designation Tables (LDT)
    • Piping specifications and line classes
    • Valve lists, specifications, and data sheets
    • Piping isometric drawings and general arrangement drawings
    • Material take-offs and material requisitions (MR)
    • Specialty item data sheets and lists
    • Tie-in lists
  • Perform maximum allowable flange rating, pipe wall thickness, and hydrotest calculations
  • Assist with material selection for various services, including:
    • Steam distribution and gathering systems
    • Emulsion, produced water, and diluent systems
    • Blowdown, relief, and flare piping
    • Sweet and our service
    • High pressure and elevated temperature service
    • Fuel gas, produced gas, and utility piping
  • Prepare engineering work packages
  • Check piping isometric materials
  • Apply sound engineering judgment related to corrosion, erosion, and operating conditions common to SAGD and gas facilities
  • Review vendor data and support technical bid evaluations
  • Provide input for development and maintaining Piping Engineering procedures and standards
  • Assist with ABSA registration packages and regulatory submissions as required
  • Authenticate documentation with a professional engineering stamp as required
  • Comply with budget, schedule and change management requirements
  • Strictly follow QA/QC procedures
  • Update project schedule on a weekly basis.
  • Prepare progress reports as directed
Interdisciplinary Coordination
  • Coordinate piping design activities with:
    • Process
    • Mechanical
    • Piping Stress
    • Civil / Structural
    • Electrical and Instrumentation
  • Participate in model reviews, constructability reviews, and design coordination meetings
  • Address design comments and support resolution of interdisciplinary issues
Project & Field Support
  • Support HAZOPs, model reviews, and constructability sessions
  • Provide engineering support during fabrication, installation, commissioning, and start-up
  • Assist with brownfield tie-ins and work within operating facility constraints
  • Respond to technical queries, field change requests, and engineering clarifications
Standards, Codes & Compliance
  • Ensure piping designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including:
    • ASME B31.3
    • CSA Z662 (as applicable)
    • Applicable API codes, ASME Section VIII, and client specifications
  • Follow applicable regulatory guidelines (ABSA and provincial authorities)
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) eligible for registration with APEGA
  • Five to Ten years of piping engineering experience, preferably within oil sands, SAGD, or gas processing facilities
  • Experience supporting EPC or brownfield projects
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Piping materials and specifications
    • Valves and piping components
    • Corrosion and materials selection fundamentals
    • Welding, NDE, and PWHT requirements (working knowledge)
  • Experience with 3D model review tools (e.g., Navisworks)
  • Proficient in Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multidiscipline team environment
Preferred
  • Experience with oil sands, SAGD, and/or gas plant facilities
  • Exposure to modularized facilities or field engineering support
  • Familiarity with ABSA registration processes
  • Experience working in brownfield or operating plant environments
  • Ability to read and interpret Material Selection Diagrams (MSD) and Material Selection Reports (MSR)
