Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to join our Buildings team. This role will lead the design and implementation of instrumentation, process controls, and facility automation systems for high-tech manufacturing, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, chemical processing, water/wastewater, and mission-critical facilities. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver technically robust, innovative, and compliant solutions that support complex industrial environments.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Provide instrumentation and controls engineering design for I&C and Facility Automation Systems (BAS/BMS/FMS).
  • Prepare wiring and raceway routing plans, instrument data sheets, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), loop wiring diagrams, PLC/DCS wiring diagrams, instrument installation details, logic diagrams, sequences of operation, HVAC and central utility plant control sequences, and input/output databases.
  • Develop and support BAS/BMS system architecture, network topology, and integration strategies.
  • Design and implement industrial communication networks including Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, DeviceNet, BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, wireless telemetry, and fiber networks.
  • Perform quality control reviews of sequences of operation, control diagrams, points lists, and commissioning documentation.
  • Apply ISA standards and industry best practices to control panel layouts, wiring schematics, conduit routing plans, and instrument plans.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, process, and commissioning teams across multiple offices.
  • Interface directly with clients to support project delivery and technical coordination.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to standards development and process improvements.
  • Support proposal reviews, estimating, workload forecasting, and recruiting efforts as needed.
  • Meet client site badging requirements, including passing background checks where required.


Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems, instrumentation design, and controls engineering principles.
  • Experience with PLC programming, ladder logic, HMI/SCADA development, BAS graphics, point databases, and alarm strategies.
  • Experience with supervisory control and data acquisition systems supporting industrial processes such as ultra-pure water (UPW), industrial waste treatment (IWT), bulk chemical distribution (BCDS), facility monitoring and control, gas plants, electrical power monitoring, exhaust scrubbers, thermal oxidizers, and process reactors.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards including NFPA 70, NFPA 497, UL 508A, UL 698A, ASHRAE 90.1, and ASHRAE 135 (BACnet).
  • Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and coordination with MEP disciplines preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD required; experience with Revit and BIM environments preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure preferred.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in instrumentation and controls design and project delivery in semiconductor, oil & gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or advanced industrial manufacturing environments.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
