About the Team and the Role

This role will be part of the Americas Corporate Indirect Tax team, providing indirect tax technical advice and support to internal stakeholders across eBay's core marketplace, subsidiaries, and affiliated businesses! As a senior individual contributor, this role will independently manage complex indirect tax matters and cross-functional initiatives. It requires strong technical knowledge and judgment to translate tax requirements into clear, practical business mentorship and to carry matters through implementation.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, self-directed tax professional with excellent analytical and investigative abilities, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to think critically and creatively. Success in this role requires a strong sense of ownership, comfort operating in a fast-paced and evolving environment, and the ability to build trusted relationships within Tax and across the broader organization. This individual will proactively identify indirect tax risks and opportunities, develop practical solutions, and continuously look for ways to improve processes and how we support the business!

What You Will Accomplish
  • Deliver timely, accurate, and practical indirect tax advice to business units across eBay's core marketplace and broader portfolio of businesses.
  • Independently research and analyze intricate tax matters. These include proposed and enacted legislation and regulatory developments. Assess their impact on eBay's businesses. Then develop appropriate recommendations and tax positions.
  • Evaluate new and evolving business initiatives, products, services, and operating models to uncover indirect tax implications and requirements.
  • Translate technical tax conclusions into clear business and functional requirements and partner with Product, Engineering, and other collaborators to support successful implementation.
  • Partner effectively with collaborators across eBay and its subsidiaries, including Tax Product, Engineering, Legal, Accounting, Finance, Customer Service, and other business functions.
  • Lead internal audit initiatives, including enhancing taxability monitoring and reporting in partnership with Product, Engineering, and Finance Innovation & Transformation (FIT).
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of tax policies, technical positions, procedures, requirements, and business-specific considerations.
  • Support indirect tax audits and controversy matters for eBay, its subsidiaries, and affiliated businesses, including responding to information requests and supporting technical tax positions.
  • Support M&A integration and post-acquisition indirect tax matters as needed including performing nexus analyses and leading registration/VDA efforts when needed.
  • Proactively find opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, controls, documentation, and scalability across the organization.


What You Will Bring
  • Extensive technical knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax, including the ability to independently research, interpret, and apply complex tax laws and guidance.
  • Working knowledge of indirect tax regimes in Canada, Mexico, and emerging markets in South America is a plus.
  • Proven track record of independently leading and managing multiple complex projects and initiatives with limited oversight.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with demonstrated experience interpreting proposed and enacted legislation, regulations, and other guidance and assessing the impact on business operations and tax positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate indirect tax implications across different business models, products, entities, transaction flows, and operating structures.
  • Ability to translate complex technical tax conclusions into clear, actionable mentorship and requirements for business and technology collaborators.
  • Demonstrated success explaining complex tax issues clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, to tax and non-tax audiences.
  • Experience with indirect tax developments and trends affecting marketplaces, e-commerce, digital services, or the broader digital economy.
  • Experience interacting directly with tax authorities and supporting indirect tax audits or controversy matters.
  • Strong ownership, initiative, and judgment, with the ability to proactively identify issues, develop solutions, and drive matters to completion.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, get-it-done approach.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt to changing priorities, and operate effectively across time zones, legal entities, business units, and within a matrixed organization.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Google Workspace, and tax research tools required.
  • Experience with Alteryx, other data-wrangling tools, SAP, and/or indirect tax technology, including Vertex, is preferred.
  • Experience bringing to bear AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, NotebookLM, Gemini) to improve tax research, analysis, documentation, or process efficiency is a plus.


Basic Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of related indirect tax experience.
  • Hands-on experience with progressively increasing scope and accountability, gained in public accounting (Big Four or similar) and/or an in-house indirect tax function for a multinational company preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with emphasis in Finance, Tax, Information Systems, or Accounting. Advanced degree or equivalent experience a plus.
  • CMI or CPA certification preferred.
  • Fluent in English; other languages are helpful.
  • Committed to work a 3-day in-office hybrid schedule.


Additional Details

The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:
$125,000 - $135,000

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
