Job Description

The Marketing and Communications Manager is an experienced internal communications content producer and project manager who works with a large amount of independence and self-direction to create compelling and timely content (stories, videos, photo essays, web page presentations) for UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial internal newsletters, updates for executive leaders, websites, digital media, social media, and traditional media platforms. In addition, this role includes responsibility for helping to plan, implement, and project-manage marketing and social media campaigns designed to build brand reputation and grow business volumes across strategic service lines at Ingalls Memorial and in the organization's ambulatory network.

The Marketing and Communications Manager exercises considerable autonomy on a project-by-project basis to support internal communication needs across the organization. This senior-level role also provides media relations strategy and support for Ingalls Memorial, including pitching earned media coverage, planning, and executing media events, such as news conferences. When needed, this senior-level staff member consults and /or provides strategic communications, creative content, and marketing support throughout the organization.

This has been designated as a hybrid role, with the expectation that the Marketing and Communications Manager would report to Ingalls' main business office in Harvey and/or an Ingalls outpatient center an average of 2-3 days per week. The individual may also need to occasionally travel to UChicago Medicine's Hyde Park campus for in-person meetings with UChicago Medicine's Marketing and Communications department.

Essential Job Functions
  • As assigned, work directly with senior leaders, clinical leadership, and other stakeholders to develop communication projects and media relations events to support UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial objectives.
  • These contributions pertain especially to preparing creative executions, presentations, concepts and themes and in determining target audiences, appropriate media, evaluation methods, budgets and timing.
  • Obtain proper approvals on a timely basis from within the department as well as from clients.
  • Create messages and images for a full range of healthcare communications and marketing projects in virtually any communications medium, with a focus on digital and social media, based on the defined creative concept, theme, strategy and budget of an assigned project.
  • Write original copy for use on the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial website and social media channels, in advertisements, direct response materials, brochures, annual or quarterly reports, booklets, regular publications, letters, audiovisual or radio scripts, posters, or other promotional materials directed to healthcare consumers, patients, physicians, business or other target audiences as assigned.
  • Maintain the communications standard, including approval process, editorial style, graphic system, tone, and images appropriate to the hospital's and/or as specified.
  • Contribute to the documentation and evaluation of completed projects, especially those aspects pertaining to creative executions, concepts and themes, target audiences, media used and expenses.
  • Represent the Marketing and Communications department in meetings with other departments, senior leaders, physicians, patients, and others as needed.
  • Write weekly/monthly activity reports for review by the senior leadership of the UChicago Medicine Marketing and Communications Department. Reports will include time spent on projects, status of projects, project budget/expenses and other information as required.
  • Frequently meets/collaborates with, and is supported by, various members of UChicago Medicine's Marketing and Communications department, inclusive of marketing, internal communications, digital and media relations resources.
  • Performs other duties assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in a related field
  • Strong data analytics skills and experience with Excel
  • Seven or more years of relevant experience in public relations, marketing management, strategic communications, digital media content creation and/or journalism with an emphasis on healthcare marketing and communications
  • Proven skills in project management, content creation, including strategic storytelling for digital and traditional media platforms, with an emphasis on website content
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to work well with creative staff, administrators and medical professionals are required
  • Experience in supervising creative staff, events staff and agencies/contracted vendors preferred

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
