Job Summary:

Shape the future of imaging-based research while advancing discoveries that impact patient care at UW-Madison. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Radiology-internationally recognized for innovation in imaging science, translational research, and clinical excellence-is seeking an Imaging Research Services Assistant Director to provide strategic, operational, and administrative leadership for research imaging services within the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR).

In this pivotal role, you will directly oversee our imaging modality managers across CT, PET/CT, PET/MR, MRI, and Ultrasound, ensuring seamless coordination of research imaging operations across all platforms. You will also work closely with the Associate Director of Research to strengthen operational alignment, enhance investigator support, and advance the department's imaging research strategy. You will help optimize workflows, strengthen compliance and safety practices, and facilitate high-quality support for investigators utilizing advanced imaging technologies. Working collaboratively with faculty scientists, research staff, technologists, modality managers, and administrative partners, you will foster an environment that enables efficient study execution and accelerates scientific discovery. Key responsibilities include shaping operational strategy for research imaging, supporting resource and budget planning, improving process efficiency, and guiding initiatives that enhance investigator experience, study throughput, and data quality. You will play an essential role in aligning imaging research operations with departmental and institutional priorities while promoting a culture grounded in service, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
  • This position is primarily onsite, with occasional remote flexibility approved by leadership, to maintain strong engagement with frontline teams, research partners, and instrumentation in WIMR.
  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Formulates and implements technical strategies, plans, and goals for a client-based research program
  • Serves as the principal technical liaison
  • Plans staff implementation of protocols and ongoing quality review of one or multiple highly complex clinical research trials or programs
  • Assists in the development and oversight of the strategic planning and analysis of the research program budget
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Develops and executes budgets and costing strategies for products/services in compliance with university and state policies

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $100,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience in medical imaging operations, radiology administration, clinical research administration, and/or a closely related healthcare setting.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory or team-lead experience including oversight of staff, workflow coordination, and/or operational leadership.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in an academic medical center and/or research-intensive environment.
  • Familiarity with imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, PET/CT, PET/MR, and Ultrasound.
  • Experience with process improvement, workflow optimization, and/or operational efficiency projects.


Education:

Bachelors Preferred; focus in healthcare administration, business, science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
