HVAC Procurement Engineer

Construction Procurement Solutions | STO Building Group | Manhattan, NY

About the Opportunity

Construction Procurement Solutions, part of STO Building Group, is seeking an HVAC Procurement Engineer to support major projects across the United States. This role involves working directly with General Contractors, equipment manufacturers, and internal project teams to deliver cost-effective HVAC equipment solutions on high-profile construction projects nationwide.

The HVAC Procurement Engineer will be responsible for technical estimating, bid package development, submittal coordination, and stakeholder communication throughout the equipment procurement lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Preconstruction & Estimating
  • Review HVAC specifications, drawings, and project requirements to develop accurate equipment takeoffs and scope definitions
  • Build competitive budgets and estimates for HVAC systems across diverse project types and locations
  • Analyze specifications and identify equipment options that meet design requirements
  • Collaborate with design teams and General Contractors during preconstruction to clarify scope and verify equipment selections

Bid Package Development & Management
  • Develop comprehensive bid packages with clear scope definitions, specifications, and technical requirements
  • Solicit competitive pricing from equipment manufacturers across multiple equipment categories
  • Perform detailed bid leveling and comparison to ensure apples-to-apples evaluations
  • Coordinate with internal purchasing team for contract execution and final negotiations

Technical Coordination
  • Review equipment submittals for compliance with specifications and design intent
  • Verify equipment performance requirements (voltage, amperage, short circuit ratings, breaker sizing, coordination studies, etc.)
  • Coordinate with engineers and subcontractors to ensure equipment compatibility and system integration
  • Support RFI responses and technical clarifications throughout the project lifecycle
  • Collaborate with design teams to resolve conflicts or specification discrepancies

Project Communication & Coordination
  • Work closely with Post-Award Coordinators to monitor equipment production schedules and delivery timelines
  • Communicate project status, equipment updates, and delivery schedules to General Contractors and stakeholders
  • Coordinate technical information flow between manufacturers, subcontractors, and project teams
  • Maintain organized project documentation including bid packages, submittals, specifications, and equipment schedules

Market Research & Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current on HVAC equipment technologies, product lines, and manufacturer capabilities
  • Build knowledge of equipment options, lead times, and market conditions across different regions
  • Contribute to process improvements and support the scaling of estimating operations as the company grows


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in HVAC estimating, HVAC contracting, MEP coordination, or related construction roles
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, equipment types, and HVAC specifications
  • Ability to read and interpret HVAC drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, and design documents

Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with construction software (Bluebeam, Building Connected, Procore, or similar platforms)
  • Experience with estimating or takeoff software preferred
  • Strong analytical skills for bid leveling and equipment comparison
  • Understanding of Mechanical standards

Professional Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordination across multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable coordinating projects nationwide (minimal travel required, primarily remote coordination)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with HVAC equipment selection and submittal review
  • Familiarity with major HVAC equipment manufacturers (Daikin, Trane, York, AAON, etc.)
  • Knowledge of HVAC system design principles, coordination requirements.
  • Experience working with OEM manufacturers or equipment suppliers.
  • Understanding of various regional mechanical codes and requirements
  • Familiarity with switchgear, transformers, generators, panelboards, and distribution equipment
