Medical Director Hospitalist
JOB SUMMARY:
The Hospitalist Medical Director provides medical staff leadership and administrative oversight to the Hospitalist team. They are responsible for supporting the quality, patient safety, and performance improvement measures of the department. They will be active participants in the credentialing, privileging, FPPE and OPPE processes of the Hospitalists within their team. They will possess an understanding of patient throughput and operational constraints while building strong relationships in support of continuity of care. They will assist with applicable policy development, implementation and compliance monitoring. Responsibilities will also include clinical operations consultation with physicians and nurse leaders as well as key leaders through the organization. They are responsible for regulatory accreditation and compliance leadership related to medical staff functions including Utilization Review. They will be a champion in promoting safe, high-quality patient centered care and will perform duties in alignment with organizational values, bylaws, policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
The Hospitalist Medical Director will be an actively practicing physician and is required to maintain active status on NMC's Medical Staff and will be scheduled for regular clinical shifts.
PRE-REQUISITES:
Education: As outlined in the NMC Medical Staff Bylaws
Experience: Experience as an Inpatient/Hospitalist Physician. Medical Director experience preferred.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Chief Medical Officer
Supervises: Hospitalists to include Advanced Practice Providers and Physicians
Other Contacts: Medical Staff members, patients and patients' families, public, and hospital employees.
SCOPE:
Machinery or Equipment Used: Computer, telephone, wheelchair, gurney, fax, copier, electronic monitoring, treatment device, medication dispenser - Omnicell, wheeled carts, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment necessary to perform duties within the limits of their training, experience and granted privileges.
Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling or crouching. Ability to move quickly in response to emergency care situations.
Working Conditions: Conditions where there is potential for danger to life and health in dealing with violent/infectious patients. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Regularly exposed to risk of blood borne diseases, hazards from electrical equipment, housekeeping cleaning agents or chemicals from contaminated patients. May be exposed to unpleasant patient or department conditions. Subject to pressures of multiple calls/interruptions and crisis situations.
Required Protective Equipment: Ergonomically correct computer equipment, as well as PPE required on a case by case basis to perform appropriate patient care (eye protection, face protection, goggles, mask, gown, non-sterile medical gloves and sterile medical gloves).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide medical staff leadership and administrative oversight for the Hospitalist team, including physicians and advanced practice providers.
2. Maintain regular clinical practice as an active member of NMC's Medical Staff and participate in scheduled clinical shifts.
3. Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Emergency Department, nursing leaders, physicians, and organizational leaders to support continuity of care and operational alignment.
4. Champion interdepartmental collaboration, service excellence, and continuous improvement across the hospitalist program.
5. In collaboration with the Nursing Director, lead departmental quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives to promote safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
6. Participate in credentialing, privileging, focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE), and ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) processes for Hospitalist providers.
7. Monitor hospitalist service performance, patient throughput, utilization management, and operational challenges; identify and implement process improvements.
8. Assist with development, implementation, and compliance monitoring of applicable clinical and medical staff policies.
9. Provide leadership for regulatory accreditation and compliance activities related to medical staff functions, including Utilization Review and Utilization Management Committee participation.
10. Provide clinical operations consultation to physicians, nurse leaders, and key organizational stakeholders.
11. Proficiently interprets organizational financial reports, communicates financial implications appropriately with staff, demonstrates understanding of department productivity and expense management, proactively identifies opportunities to enhance market share, reduce expenses, and improve outcomes, and assesses the risks, effort, benefits, impact, results, and costs of proposed or current activities.
12. Use quality, service, financial, and operational data to evaluate departmental performance and recommend corrective actions or improvement strategies.
13. Support department staffing, role clarity, accountability, and team performance in alignment with organizational values, bylaws, policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
