As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking an emerging Highway/Roadway Project Engineer to support our Transportation group in our Wichita, KS location. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of 3 days of onsite office attendance.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of roadway and highway projects across the Midwest. You’ll support project delivery for state, municipal, and other public- sector clients while working under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers. In this role, you’ll take ownership of design tasks, prepare plans and technical documentation, and support project management activities to meet our high standards for delivering projects on time, within scope, and in alignment with established quality expectations. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and continue developing your technical expertise and client-facing skills within the transportation infrastructure sector.

 

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following: 

 

  • Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages. 
  • Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers on project assignments.
  • Attend internal and external meetings with the team.  
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers.
  • Coordinate the planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, quality control, of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff.
  • Participating in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance
  • Lead projects and complete tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
  • Project QA/QC.
  • Assist project managers with various other tasks.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage workload on various projects simultaneously.  
  • Initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.  
What you will bring to our firm: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Kansas; additional state licensure is a plus.
  • 8-12 years of engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design.
  • Experience with State DOT and/or local municipality/county design projects.
  • Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, self-starter, demonstrated organization skills, team player, and willingness to learn.  

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $90,000 - $115,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
