Position SummaryThe HV Project Manager owns delivery of high-voltage scope across utility-scale standalone energy storage (and occasionally solar + storage) projects. This includes collector substations, switching stations, gen-tie lines, protection & controls, SCADA/telecom, and utility interconnection requirements from late-stage development through commissioning and energization.
This role requires strong substation fundamentals, deep familiarity with gen-tie design and utility interfaces, and the ability to represent the company technically with utilities/ISOs, interconnection customers, owner's engineers, EPCs, and commissioning/testing teams. The ideal candidate can also direct/oversee HV commissioning activities and coordinate field personnel to safely achieve energization and commercial operations.
This scope strongly mirrors how leading renewable developers define interconnection + HV execution responsibilities (engineering, procurement, construction, and interconnection delivery) and how HV commissioning leaders are expected to manage site-based teams and safe execution.
Key Responsibilities HV Project Delivery- Lead HV scope from 30% through, IFC, construction, energization, and commissioning including:
- Collector substation
- Gen-tie Line
- Relay protection & controls, metering; and
- SCADA/telecomm/communications interface
- Coordinate and manage the HV scope with the Project Execution Director, including supporting EPC drawing reviews, overseeing external consultants, and providing technical leadership during EPC contracting
- Assist in M&A and due diligence activities by assessing constructability and EPC execution risk.
Utility & Interconnections Stakeholder Management- Serve as the Technical Point of contact with utilities, interconnection customers and transmission providers through:
- Design reviews and comment resolution,
- Interconnection facility requirements, design criteria, and utility standards compliance;
- Protection and control philosophy alignment and acceptance
- Utility witness testing, pre-energization checklists, and turnover requirements.
- Coordinate required submissions and approvals (drawings, studies, relay settings packages, SCADA test plans, telecom requirements, etc.).
- Drive alignment across internal development, engineering, and construction teams regarding utility requirements and milestone expectations.
HV Engineering Oversight- Provide technical oversight for:
- One-lines, three-lines, grounding, AC/DC auxiliary systems
- Equipment selection (transformers, breakers, CTs/PTs, arresters, switches)
- Relay philosophy, communications, synch-check, and metering requirements
- Gen-tie routing, ampacity, losses, insulation coordination, OPGW/fiber considerations
- Manage Owner's Engineer and/or EPC engineering deliverables; ensure design meets:
- Utility standards
- Applicable codes (NESC/NEC, IEEE, etc.)
- Interconnection agreement / facility study requirements
- Lead technical issue resolution (RFIs, NCRs, field change requests) tied to HV scope
- Ensure compliance with applicable HV and utility standards and practices (regional utility requirements, IEEE/NERC where applicable, and AHJ/regional grid requirements).
HV Commissioning Leadership & Field Oversight- Develop and drive commissioning strategy for HV scope:
- FAT/SAT coordination, pre-functional checklists, commissioning plans
- Relay testing, point-to-point checks, SCADA/telecom testing
- Energization plans, switching orders, LOTO, and safety documentation
- Coordinate and oversee onsite commissioning support to ensure:
- Ensure consistent, safe execution and documentation quality
- Drive punch list closure and readiness for utility witness testing
- Own turnover package quality: as-builts, test reports, relay settings records, training, spares, O&M handoff.
Candidate Profile Required Experience - 7+ years' experience in high voltage infrastructure related to utility scale renewables, substations, switchyards, transmission interconnection, etc.
- Demonstrated experience managing HV scope across engineering, construction, and commissioning
- Strong working knowledge of substation equipment and design fundamentals, protection and controls concepts, utility interfaces, standards compliance, and acceptance processes
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with utilities, EPCs, OEMs, and onsite personnel
- Willingness to travel up to 30% of time to visit project sites, meet with the team, customers, or vendors, and otherwise as necessary.
Competencies & Skillsets- Problem-Solving: Adaptable and flexible. Operates effectively in a fast-paced, small team environment, and can approach challenges with a creative, proactive mindset.
- Project Execution Management: Skilled in contract negotiation, project management, risk mitigation, and vendor oversight. Ensures accountability across the project team and drives results.
- Communication Skills: Develops and delivers multi-mode communications that convey clear understanding across different audiences, including internal/external presentations.
