A Brief Overview

Takes primary responsibility with the Faculty-Director for leading the Core's mission and strategic vision and overseeing all designated Core Facility activities. In particular, the incumbent will: Identify and manage strategic vision for the core including research agenda, core lab personnel needs, budget planning and management; Manage core budget and finances; and Manage core personnel; Work closely with the Chair of the Institutional Core Advisory Committee (iCAC) to manage short term and long-term goals for the technical direction of the core laboratory. Work with the iCAC Chair and Director of Research Core Services to ensure that the Core Lab is providing optimal service and outstanding customer service. The Director must be accessible to the laboratory all the time by various means. This role is responsible for overall supervision of the Core Laboratory and manages the research staff and core laboratory operations. Develops new experimental procedures and core lab services as needed. Collaborates and interacts with other researchers within the institution and at other institutions. Prepares laboratory progress reports, and laboratory budget plans. Serves as resource person for research colleagues and a mentor for less experienced research personnel. Works directly with the Director for Core Services to price service offerings in accordance with federal guidelines.

What you will do

• 1. Responsible for all technical work performed.
  • Develop, test, implement and evaluate new and creative approaches to meeting core lab and institutional goals.
  • Initiate and appropriately respond to initiatives from others to establish and evaluate integrated systems to improve services that are supportive of the mission of the Hospital and Research Institute
  • Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, protocols, policies and procedures, and performance standards
  • Participate in the collection and reviewing of data from Hospital-wide and specific departmental customer survey programs.
  • Ensure that technical issues and deviations from established research-core performance standards are investigated, addressed, and documented, and that research data are released only after applicable quality control criteria have been met.
  • Provide technical consultation to research investigators regarding sequencing methodology, data quality, study design, and appropriate use of research core services. This position will not provide clinical interpretation or patient-specific consultation.
• 2. Directs all technical and non-technical personnel.

  • As a leader and role model, participate in professional and community activities on a routine basis.
  • Provide direction regarding overall laboratory staffing and specific research projects
  • Direct personnel efforts in achieving the strategic plan for the laboratory
  • Monitor absenteeism and tardiness noting effects on other personnel and section operations.
  • Responsible for hiring, counseling and termination of staff according to CHOP policies.
  • Track annual performance reviews of staff.
• 3. Ensure compliance with applicable CHOP Research and Institutional Requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable CHOP RI policies, biosafety requirements, research protocols, and institutional quality standards.
  • Maintain current research core procedures, instrument documentation, training records, and quality control records.
  • Participate in institutional reviews or inspections applicable to research core activities.
  • Work collaboratively with DGD and other designated clinical laboratory leaders when research core activities interface with regulated clinical testing.
  • Clinical laboratory accreditation, proficiency testing, test validation, patient-result reporting and clinical interpretation remain the responsibility of the appropriately designated clinical laboratory leadership.

Education

• Master's Degree Required
• Doctorate in laboratory medicine or related field Preferred
• Doctorate in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics or related field Preferred

Experience

• At least seven (7) years of related scientific experience Required
• At least five (5) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience Preferred
• At least seven (7) years of related scientific experience in a research or clinical laboratory environment Preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Expert proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software
• Advanced proficiency with office software (Microsoft)
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Excellent project management skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
• Ability to gather, analyze and make recommendations/decisions based on data / best practices
• Ability to convey complex or technical information in an easy-to-understand manner
• Expert proficiency with high throughput sequencing platforms and laboratory management
• Advanced knowledge of sequencing protocols, data quality metrics, and troubleshooting techniques

SALARY RANGE:

$107,200.00 - $142,100.00 Annually

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.

This job is eligible for an incentive program.
