Job Description

The Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a fellowship-trained breast radiologist to join our Breast Imaging section.

The Breast Imaging Section at UAB is a high-volume clinical service consisting of a cohesive, driven group of fellowship-trained dedicated breast imagers who interpret more than 45,000 breast imaging examinations and procedures annually, including over 21,000 screening mammograms, nearly 4,000 breast MRI examinations, and more than 3,600 image-guided breast biopsies. The section provides the full spectrum of breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), image-guided localizations, and galactography.

The breast imaging team is highly innovative, offering breast cryoablation as an image-guided, minimally invasive treatment option for selected breast cancer patients. It represents an evolving component of image-guided breast oncology at UAB, expanding the role of breast imagers in the direct management of early-stage breast cancer in patients seeking non-surgical or adjunctive treatment approaches. Another innovative component of the UAB Breast Imaging program is a dedicated granulomatous mastitis service that provides intralesional steroid injections for immediate and sustained relief of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM), a rare inflammatory breast disease that can closely mimic malignancy. The team provides complete multidisciplinary evaluation and management of IGM. The service combines these tools to administer medical therapy while reducing unnecessary surgical intervention through coordinated input from breast surgery and other specialties as needed.

As an ACR-designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center, the section is actively engaged in major national and multi-institutional clinical trials, including TMIST, CMIST, and I-SPY2, along with ongoing research in breast MRI, CEM, and artificial intelligence-driven imaging innovations. The Breast Imaging Section operates within a comprehensive Breast Health Center in close collaboration with breast surgery, oncology, pathology, and radiation oncology. Multidisciplinary conferences, coordinated clinical care, and shared research initiatives unite the clinical and imaging teams in advancing breast cancer care. The academic mission is strongly supported by education and mentorship with dedicated teaching for medical students and residents. There are two breast imaging and one women's imaging fellowship positions annually.

Applicants should be ABR-Certified or have passed the core examinations and be on track to take the certifying examination. Breast fellowship training or equivalent experience in breast imaging is required. The applicant must be eligible to practice medicine in Alabama. Candidate must be willing to collaborate and should have a strong affinity for teaching. An established record of scholarly work is valued. There is opportunity for departmental leadership for those interested and with proven leadership skills.

Academic rank, compensation, and tenure eligibility will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. Fully remote appointments are not eligible for tenure-track consideration. Approval for remote work arrangements is contingent upon the candidate's location and other institutional and departmental factors.
